Leaving Li Ruo’s office, Ye Chen’s face was clouded with frustration. He never expected to encounter such an absurd turn of events. He had just been interviewed by someone, only to find out moments later that she was not only his supervisor’s supervisor but also wielded significant authority. Damn, it really felt like he’d stepped into a bad luck charm. Descending from the twentieth floor, he headed straight for the security department.

As soon as he stepped through the door, he saw that chubby guy who had tested his IQ last time, now spraying spittle as he berated several security guards in black shirts. The way the fat man scolded people was almost stylish—one hand on his waist, his hefty belly rising and falling, the black suit stretched to its absolute limit. The collar was unbuttoned, two buttons undone, spittle flying as he yelled, while the guards hung their heads, some surreptitiously wiping their faces.

“You bunch of useless good-for-nothings, you can’t even handle something so simple!”

“What’s the point of me keeping you around, huh?”

“Damn it all!”

The fat man roared in anger. Ye Chen, puzzled, walked in. The man immediately noticed him, looking fierce as he asked, “What do you want? Which department are you from?”

“Uh…” Ye Chen hesitated, then quickly put on a smile, drew a pack of premium Red Happiness cigarettes from his pocket, and offered one. “Hey, big guy, have a smoke, calm your nerves!”

“It’s you?” The fat man squinted in surprise. “You managed to pass the test?”

“Heh, you underestimated me, didn’t you?” Ye Chen hooked his arm around the fat man’s shoulder. “Those guys? They weren’t even a challenge! I’m reporting to the security department today—never thought I’d run into an old acquaintance. So, where do I go to register?”

“Register?” The fat man chuckled, then turned and barked at the standing guards, “Get lost! Standing here waiting for me to chew you out, huh?”

The guards hustled each other out, vanishing in a flash. The fat man, now all smiles, looked at Ye Chen. “So, you’re the one who put those guys in the hospital?”

Ye Chen froze. So those guys had actually ended up in the hospital because of him? He hadn’t even realized. He’d have to be more careful at work—he’d already made enemies before even starting. That could be troublesome.

“Take care of me in the future, alright?” Ye Chen patted the fat man’s shoulder, grinning. “By the way, what’s your name?”

“My surname’s Li, and my first name is Cheng,” Li Cheng replied, giving Ye Chen a sidelong glance as he walked to his desk, pulling out a personnel form and handing it over. “Fill this out, and I’ll issue you a uniform.”

“Oh, so you’re the boss here? Nice to meet you!” Ye Chen, cigarette dangling from his lips, hurried to fill out the form and handed it back, receiving a security uniform in exchange.

Li Cheng handed Ye Chen a set of keys. “This is for your locker. The job sounds fancy—bodyguard—but in truth, it’s not much different from being a security guard. You won’t be doing the usual rounds, but whenever Director Li goes out, you need to be with her at all times. And don’t think too highly of yourself—just consider yourself a dog, got it?”

“Uh… yes, of course!” Ye Chen instantly put on a respectful expression. After all, he’d be working under this guy; no point making enemies.

“Good, work hard and I’ll look out for you!” Li Cheng patted Ye Chen’s shoulder, laughing. “You’re not bad, kid.”

“Thanks for your support!” Ye Chen took the uniform and left.

His first day at work wasn’t really a proper day—just reporting in and collecting his uniform before heading back home. He didn’t even bother trying it on, just tossed the clothes onto the sofa when his phone rang.

The caller ID showed it was Liu Momo.

“Brother Chen, it’s our last day off—come shopping with me?” Liu Momo’s voice was sweet, with a hint of reliance whenever she spoke to him.

“Sure, I’ll change clothes first. Wait for me at the school gate!” Ye Chen agreed readily. How could he turn down an invitation from a beauty?

He quickly changed into a new outfit, and the freshly issued security uniform came in handy. Deep blue, crisp and new, it made quite an impression on Ye Chen’s tall, fit frame, his tousled hair and sharp features giving him a striking look.

At the agreed spot, he drove his somewhat old Alto towards Jianghuai University.

Jianghuai University wasn’t far from Xinhai Community—just a few minutes’ drive. From a distance, he saw Liu Momo standing at the school gate in a floral dress, shielding her eyes from the sun with a slender, fair hand, her expression a bit anxious. Compared to the girls beside her, she stood out like a crane among chickens—truly dazzling.

No doubt, her figure was the result of years of exercise—tall and upright, with just the right curves, a perfect example of a well-developed young woman. Long legs, slim waist, standing at about one meter sixty-seven, her figure was flawless. Even someone as picky as Ye Chen couldn’t help but admire her.

Screech—

The Alto pulled up in front of Liu Momo. Her eyes lit up, and she flashed a sweet smile, quickly hopping into the passenger seat.

“You’re two minutes early, Brother Chen! So I’ve decided to reward you!” she said with a grin.

“Oh? And how will you reward me?” Ye Chen asked, shifting into reverse and spinning the wheel as he sped off.

Liu Momo giggled, blushing slightly, then leaned over and planted a quick kiss on his cheek. “That’s your reward!”

Ye Chen was momentarily stunned. When he turned to look at her, she was already gazing out the window, unable to meet his eyes. He could see the blush spreading up to her ears.

Ye Chen chuckled helplessly and pressed down on the accelerator. The South Gate Commercial Street was the largest trade center in Jianghuai City, a famous pedestrian street and the oldest, most developed, and most bustling commercial district in the city. From its origins as a stone-paved street in the eighties, it had evolved into a symbol of modern commerce.

They found a parking lot—these days, owning a car wasn’t easy, and you had to pay for parking everywhere.

After leaving the parking lot and strolling a while, Liu Momo’s cheeks finally returned to their normal color. She hooked her arm through Ye Chen’s and said, “Brother, I want to buy some underwear. Will you come with me?”

“What?” Ye Chen stared at her, wide-eyed. “Are you serious?”

“Are you refusing?” Liu Momo frowned slightly.

“No, no!” Ye Chen shook his head quickly. “It’s just… isn’t it a bit awkward for me to go?”

“What’s awkward about it?” She shot him a look and dragged him toward a lingerie store.

The shop was called “Monlina,” and it was bustling with customers. Clearly, business was good. Groups of girls led their boyfriends around, picking out underwear. Seeing that there were other men present, Ye Chen felt relieved—at least he wasn’t alone. Judging from the men’s faces, they were all suffering as much as he was.

“Brother Chen, what do you think of this one?” Liu Momo held up a pink bra.

Ye Chen took a look and nearly gasped. Wasn’t this thing a bit too sexy? There was so little fabric it could barely cover a palm, and it looked flimsy to boot—priced at one hundred ninety-nine! Was this a joke?

“This style is great!” said the sales assistant, coming over with a smile. “It’s our bestseller this year, the latest design, and right now it’s on special offer.”

“No, not this one!” Ye Chen shook his head quickly. “Momo, it’s not right for you.”

“Huh? Why not?” she asked, holding the bra up to her chest.

“You’re still young—it’s not suitable. You should choose something looser,” Ye Chen said, taking a more conservative bra from the rack. “Wearing bras that are too small or tight can affect blood and lymph circulation and increase the risk of breast problems.”

Liu Momo stared at him, then took the bra from his hand, puzzled. “You seem to know a lot about this, Brother Chen?”

“It’s related to my previous work,” Ye Chen replied with a faint smile. “You’re only eighteen; it’s best not to wear bras too often—it’s not good for your development.”

“Okay,” she nodded, handing the selected bra to the assistant to wrap up.

“I’ll pay,” Ye Chen said gallantly. Knowing her family’s situation, he insisted. She didn’t refuse—after all, she planned to be with him, and his money would be hers in the future.

After shopping, Liu Momo continued to cling to Ye Chen’s arm as they walked on.

Just as they were about to find a place to eat, a man in a black suit hurried past Liu Momo, nearly knocking her over. Ye Chen was about to curse him out, but the man quickly turned to apologize, “Sorry, sorry!”

Such bumps were common enough, and the man didn’t seem to mean any harm, so Ye Chen let it go with a mutter, “Watch where you’re going.”

“Yes, yes!” The man quickly walked away.

Watching the man’s retreating back, Ye Chen felt something was off. Normally, people look straight ahead when walking, but this man kept glancing around, his hands stuffed in his pockets. Ye Chen’s gaze sharpened as he caught sight of a black metallic object peeking from the man’s pocket.

Black lacquer finish—a Type 64 Chinese pistol!

Ye Chen’s eyes widened. A handgun in a busy shopping district was no small matter. It could only be a robbery or a planned murder. Either way, it would cause a storm in a city like Jianghuai.

No, he had to stop him!

“Momo, you go back first. I have something to do!” Ye Chen gripped her shoulders urgently. “Listen—go back the way we came, don’t go forward!”

“What’s wrong?” Liu Momo could see from his expression that something serious was afoot. With his skills, he’d never be this tense unless it was dangerous. She grabbed his hand, “Brother Chen, is it dangerous? Let’s leave together!”

“No, I have something to handle!” Ye Chen’s eyes followed the swiftly departing man in black. He nudged Liu Momo. “Go now—I’ll find you later!”

With that, he turned and left. Liu Momo wanted to follow, but she knew she’d only be a burden, so she obeyed and hurried off without looking back, afraid to cause him any trouble.

Meanwhile, Ye Chen tailed the man in black, buying a newspaper for cover. But the guy was such an amateur he didn’t even know basic anti-surveillance techniques.

Winding through the crowd, the man slipped around a corner and positioned himself behind a pillar, eyes trained on a high-end handbag store—Louis Donway. Slowly, he drew the black handgun from his pocket, wrapping it in black cloth so passersby wouldn’t notice. The muzzle was pointed at the store entrance.

Just then, a slender, fashionable figure emerged from the store—a cascade of ink-black hair, delicate features, pink rhinestone glasses. Ye Chen was stunned—wasn’t that his boss, Director Li? Looking ahead, he saw the man’s finger flick the safety off, ready to fire.

An assassination? A shooting?

Ye Chen instantly recalled recent news—Li Ruo’s brush with gunfire at a factory. Could this be connected? Just as he hesitated, the man in black squeezed the trigger.

Bang!

A sharp crack—the bullet struck the glass door to Li Ruo’s left.

Crash!

The glass door shattered into countless pieces. Seeing he’d missed, the man in black raised his gun for another shot. Ye Chen didn’t hesitate—he hurled a dagger from his sleeve.

Thunk—

The blade sank into the man’s arm, and the pistol clattered to the ground. The man cried out, turning to see Ye Chen charging toward him.

Meanwhile, in a nondescript black Elantra by the roadside, two burly men in black suits poked their heads out.

“Damn, something went wrong!” the driver shouted, stepping on the gas.

“Retreat!” the passenger said coolly.
