Knock, knock, knock...

A series of knocks sounded at the door. Ye Chen froze for a moment, then a smile quickly appeared on his face as he instinctively took a step back.

“Stay right there!” Yaoyue glared at Ye Chen. “If you try anything, I swear I’ll slice off your manhood! That way, you can forget about women for the rest of your life!”

“Uh…” Ye Chen hesitated. “How about we negotiate something? What will it take for you to give up hunting me down?”

“Hmph, how many times do I have to say it? Anyone who takes advantage of me has only one fate!” Yaoyue’s voice was icy as she stared at Ye Chen, gritting her teeth. “And that is—death!”

Knock, knock, knock.

The knocks at the door grew more urgent.

“Who is it? What’s with all the knocking? In a hurry to collect a corpse or something?” Ye Chen called out quickly, afraid the person outside would leave if no one inside responded. He didn’t want to lose this unexpected protection.

“Hmph, don’t think the police at the door can save you!” Yaoyue sneered coldly. “If I wanted you dead, it would be as easy as turning my hand!”

“Big talk. You’ve been after me for a year and I’m still alive and well!” Ye Chen shot back mercilessly.

“There’s a reason for that!” Yaoyue gave him a sharp look. “Rest assured, I won’t hunt you anymore.”

Ye Chen was stunned. This… this was too sudden! Over the past year, Yaoyue’s pursuit had been like a living nightmare. But in a way, it made life interesting. If suddenly all that was gone, wouldn’t things become dull? He quickly asked, “W-why? Did something happen with Ghost?”

“Yes.” Yaoyue nodded. “Actually, this year’s pursuit had two purposes: First, to train your survival skills; second, to protect you. What you don’t know is that I’ve secretly taken out several groups sent by the General to kill you.”

Ye Chen gasped, dumbstruck. He could hardly believe it—the truth behind the chase was so unexpected! He looked up at Yaoyue, swallowing hard. “Is… is that really true?”

“If you don’t believe me, ask your adjutant.” Yaoyue waved toward the window. A man in a worn military uniform jumped down from the sill, his sharp eyes sweeping the room before settling on Ye Chen. He nodded. “Brother Ye, the leader speaks the truth. If not for her, our forces would have been wiped out.”

“Yaoyue!” Ye Chen’s face suddenly turned sincere. He looked at her and said, “Thank you.”

“Hmph, don’t thank me!” Yaoyue shot him a dark look. “Just keep yourself alive and wash your neck—wait for me to come back and finish the job. I’m heading to the Golden Triangle. Don’t worry about the General’s power for now, but be wary of the people he sends.”

Knock, knock, knock…

The knocking at the door grew even more urgent, but still, there was no reply.

“I understand,” Ye Chen nodded. For the first time, he found Yaoyue rather endearing.

“Alright, I’m leaving!” With those words, Yaoyue and Ye Chen’s adjutant leaped out the window and vanished in an instant. Ye Chen rushed over, but the two figures had already disappeared around the corner.

He hurried to open the door. There, standing proudly, were two strikingly beautiful policewomen. Ye Chen recognized them—they were the same officers who’d appeared during the chase with the criminal a few days ago. One of them, if he remembered correctly, was even the squad leader.

Ye Chen’s eyes swept over them. Their auras were entirely different—one, like plum blossoms in winter, cool and reserved; the other, a fiery rose in spring. The officer on the left wore two bars and a star on her shoulder—she must have been of the police station rank. Her sharply tailored, jet-black uniform was topped with a policewoman’s cap, accentuating her elegant figure, making Ye Chen swallow unconsciously—a detail not missed by Zhang Yantong.

“What’s going on here? What took you so long to open the door?” Fang Qin scolded, staring at Ye Chen. “Come clean—is there something shady in this room?”

“Heaven and earth can witness my innocence!” Ye Chen shook his head vigorously. “I’m a model citizen, why would I do anything illegal?”

“Model citizen?” Fang Qin scoffed. “A model citizen who assaults police officers and escapes custody?”

That accusation instantly ignited Ye Chen’s fury. He’d barely recovered from his ordeal with Yaoyue, and now these two were wrongfully accusing him. “Damn it! I helped you catch a criminal, and instead of gratitude, you bite the hand that feeds you? If I hadn’t saved your life and taken a bullet for you, would you even be standing here? What’s a police officer worth, anyway? Easy for you to talk tough with an arrest warrant in hand—give me a break! I feel like a complete fool!”

Even a rabbit will bite when cornered, let alone a man like Ye Chen, once the infamous leader of the Remnant Wolf syndicate in the Golden Triangle, though he’d since been suppressed by the General’s men.

“You!” Fang Qin trembled with anger, pointing at Ye Chen. “Don’t mistake our intentions. We’re here to help you!”

“Help me? Ha!” Ye Chen laughed derisively, pointing at her. “You barge in and immediately accuse me of attacking police, scold me for running away? What a joke! I’m not a criminal, nor a murderer!”

“Bastard…” Fang Qin, unable to out-argue him, raised her fist, temper flaring.

“That’s enough.” Zhang Yantong, who had been silently observing, finally spoke up. Her earlier silence was just to size up Ye Chen. To be honest, she’d already investigated him—his entire history was a blank. In other words, there was no record of him in the civil registry. That left two possibilities: either he wasn’t a citizen and was an illegal foreigner, or his file was highly classified. Without national SSS-level clearance, no one could access his records.

Zhang Yantong leaned toward the latter, but after hearing Ye Chen’s words, she began to reconsider. Before her, this man seemed neither mysterious nor inscrutable—just a roguish, smooth-talking scoundrel.

A graduate of the National Police University, Zhang Yantong had undergone extensive weapons training and met many formidable people, including the legendary Iron Eagle Special Forces. Their identities were so secretive, only the highest authorities knew their backgrounds. She’d once trained under them and was left in awe of their skills—never had she imagined a human could be so powerful.

“Mr. Ye,” Zhang Yantong began politely, lips parting in a gentle smile. “Sorry to intrude on you like this.”

“If you’re sorry, shouldn’t you just leave?” Ye Chen folded his arms, acting smug.

Zhang Yantong hadn’t expected him to be so quick to show them the door. She knew she was attractive and had noticed Ye Chen’s gaze when she entered—so why was he so eager to send them away? With a graceful smile, she said, “I suppose you’d like the manslaughter charge hanging over your head to disappear?”

“What, saving you was a crime?” Ye Chen snapped, growing more annoyed with the two women. He regretted having interfered in the first place—if the criminal had escaped, it would have been no concern of his. Now, he was caught up in endless trouble.

“And what about Feng Zhixiao?” Zhang Yantong’s lips curled into a knowing smile. “He’s now facing charges of intentional assault. You wouldn’t want him taking the fall for you, would you?”

At the mention of Feng Zhixiao, Ye Chen’s heart softened. That silly kid—why did he insist on covering for him? Now he was facing serious charges. Ye Chen looked at Zhang Yantong and asked, “So, what do you want?”

“Nothing much. We shouldn’t have made things so tense. Let’s sit and talk,” Zhang Yantong said, treating the place as her own, settling onto the sofa and patting the seat beside her. Fang Qin followed, leaving Ye Chen, the master of the house, still standing with an aggrieved look. Zhang Yantong smiled when she saw his expression. “Don’t look so wronged. We’re not here to arrest you.”

“Alright, what do you want?” Ye Chen looked them over.

“Actually, we want you to work with us.” Zhang Yantong smiled, brushing a strand of hair from beneath her cap. The subtle movement, paired with her pure and elegant smile, left Ye Chen momentarily stunned.

Her eyes sparkled with charm, her nose delicate, cheeks tinged with shyness, lips like cherry blossoms, and her fair skin glowed like jade—she was like a rare flower blooming quietly in a secluded valley. Noticing Ye Chen’s gaze, Zhang Yantong smiled shyly. “Hey, can’t you act a little more composed? Do you stare at every girl like a lovesick fool?”

“Uh…” Ye Chen snapped out of it, quickly scratching his head. “Let’s stick to business.”

“It’s simple—agree to cooperate with us and I’ll take care of this mess, including Feng Zhixiao’s case.” Zhang Yantong stood. “If not, be prepared for the police to come for you.”

With that, the two of them headed for the door. Ye Chen felt the pressure mounting. If it were just about himself, he might not care, but with Feng Zhixiao involved, he couldn’t ignore it.

Zhang Yantong was gambling that Ye Chen cared about Feng Zhixiao. She’d investigated, questioned Feng Zhixiao, and the evidence was clear—Ye Chen truly valued him. That’s why she dared to take this risk. As she walked toward the door, her brow knitted slightly, teeth biting her lip as she waited for Ye Chen’s response. But just as she reached the door, he remained silent.

“Wait!”

Just as Zhang Yantong was about to give up, Ye Chen called out.

“What is it?” Zhang Yantong asked with a bright smile.

“You win,” Ye Chen sighed. “You gambled right. I do care about Feng Zhixiao. Let him go.”

“I knew I wasn’t wrong about you,” Zhang Yantong replied with a laugh.

“So, what case do you need me to be your informant for?” Ye Chen asked helplessly.

“Tomorrow morning at nine, come to the police station to find me,” Zhang Yantong said, handing him a business card. “Here’s my card. Call me when you arrive. I’ll have someone meet you downstairs.”

With that, she turned and left—this time, her steps were brisk and light, free from the earlier tension and complexity.
