Chapter 60: The Cunning Blackwind Demon Wolf

"Qilin! Are you alright?!" As soon as I landed, I heard Meteor’s anxious voice.
In truth, when Meteor saw the Scavenger Qilin charge headlong at the Blackwind Demon Wolf once more, he wanted to rush in and help several times, but ultimately... he hesitated and shrank back.
It wasn’t that he lacked courage, but rather that the speed of both the Scavenger Qilin and the Blackwind Demon Wolf was simply too much for a physically frail mage like him to keep up with. What’s more, the Blackwind Demon Wolf’s physical defense likely exceeded his maximum attack; not only would he be unable to help, he might even become a liability.
But when he saw me—Scavenger Qilin—blasted away by a wind blade and sent crashing to the base of a large tree, he could no longer hold back his concern.
Hearing this pointless inquiry, I forced a bitter smile in my heart: Am I alright? Losing 23 HP in a single blow—how could I possibly be fine? Why don’t you come and try it yourself?
Fortunately, I didn’t come away empty-handed. That last strike not only took 81 HP off the Blackwind Demon Wolf, but also triggered the paralysis effect on my Silver Beast Magic Dagger.
Though the effect was weak and only lasted a second, it was enough to prevent the Blackwind Demon Wolf from pursuing me further. Otherwise, my two levels’ worth of experience would have gone up in smoke—I'm on the verge of reaching level 14, and if I died now, I’d drop straight back to the start of level 12.
The moment I hit the ground, I ignored the searing pain in my abdomen, rolled swiftly, and sprang to my feet. As the Blackwind Demon Wolf shook off the paralysis, I darted behind a tree just in time.
By the time the Blackwind Demon Wolf fully recovered, “Crouch to Talk” and “Little Mei” had finally executed the first Blackwind Demon Wolf over on their side.
“The Blackwind Demon Wolf has died. You gain 69 experience points!”
Yet, as planned, the two of them moved to support the Xuanwu Titan. The Xuanwu Titan’s situation was no less dire than mine—Black Jasmine’s basic healing spell was limited and her MP had already run dry.
I glanced over and saw that the Xuanwu Titan had switched to a small one-handed short sword and, together with Crouch to Talk and Little Mei, was rapidly closing in on the second Blackwind Demon Wolf. Only then did I finally breathe a sigh of relief.
As long as things remained stable on their end, I had nothing else to worry about.
Still... I dared not let my guard down. The Blackwind Demon Wolf’s last wind blade had nearly killed me in an instant. Now, with only 2 HP left, a single touch from it would mean certain death.

Withdrawing my gaze, I quickly pulled out a small healing potion, tipped my head back, and drank it down.
My HP began to recover at a rate of several points every five seconds.
At that moment, I didn’t forget to keep an eye on the Blackwind Demon Wolf as it recovered from paralysis.
Cautiously, I rose and pressed myself against the tree trunk, peering outside...
But just as I poked my head out from behind the tree, I saw the Blackwind Demon Wolf standing in its original spot, its blood-red eyes glinting with a vicious light, locked dead on me. A wind blade swirling with black energy formed and shot out.
Cursing, I jerked my head back. The wind blade shrieked past my ear, flying into the black shrubbery ahead.
Damn! That Blackwind Demon Wolf actually stood its ground, readying its magic for the moment I showed myself! If I had reacted a second slower, that potion would have been wasted for nothing.
Damn it!
Muttering curses, I risked another glance outside—though the Blackwind Demon Wolf could cast magic nearly instantaneously, as long as I was on guard, I wouldn’t be caught off guard.
Besides, the creature’s cunning made me wary; if I didn’t keep a close eye on its movements, it might pull something completely unexpected.
My suspicions were soon confirmed... One more glance, and a cold sweat broke out all over me!
The Blackwind Demon Wolf had not stayed in its original position, but instead dashed swiftly from another angle, circling behind the tree trunk.
As expected of a beast that inherited both the power and the intelligence of the wolf clan; if I hadn’t been this cautious and kept my wits about me, I’d probably have been slaughtered by the beast before I knew it.
A chill ran down my spine. I quickly sheathed my Silver Beast Magic Dagger at my waist, pulled my hardwood longbow from my back, and nocked an arrow to the string.

As I readied myself, my feet never stopped moving; I darted out from behind the tree, not even bothering to aim, and let an arrow fly!
“Hit! Dealt 9 points of damage to Blackwind Demon Wolf.” Though the damage was slight, it made the Blackwind Demon Wolf, who had hoped to sneak up on me, realize its plan had failed. It twisted its head, and a wind blade swiftly took shape.
This time, I was prepared. As soon as the wind blade formed, I ducked back behind the tree, and the Blackwind Demon Wolf’s attack missed again.
Once the attack had passed, I immediately peeked out to check on its movements.
After several failed attempts, the Blackwind Demon Wolf finally realized that trickery would not succeed against me, and it began to attack head-on! It circled the tree where I hid, keeping its distance, and every time I appeared, it would stop and release a wind blade.
But I refused to take the bait. Using the tree as cover, I managed to avoid all the wind blades, retaliating now and then with my own arrows.
After several exchanges, the Blackwind Demon Wolf had lost more than fifty HP. At last, it gave up on this fruitless strategy, ignoring the Scavenger Qilin’s advantage in melee, and charged straight at me, ready to fight to the death.
By this time, the battle on the other side was nearing its end as well. The third Blackwind Demon Wolf was falling silent under the combined assault of the Xuanwu Titan, Crouch to Talk, and Little Mei.
By rights, I could have kept circling the tree, waiting for them to come to my aid, but that was not my way—avoiding close combat was simply not my style.
Moreover, the Blackwind Demon Wolf’s reckless charge put it in greater danger. If I couldn’t use my own strengths to defeat it, what right would I have to challenge a Blackwind Demon Wolf on my own in the future?
A level 5 silver-tier item, you say? Hmph...
I gently pressed my hand to the tree trunk, facing the Blackwind Demon Wolf hurtling toward me, and in the next instant, the Silver Beast Magic Dagger flashed like lightning: No! To me, those pieces of gear are nothing more than a means to buy time, a shortcut to higher levels and greater power... nothing more!
