Chapter 100: The Arrival of the Supreme One
As each Magic Wolf fell, the adult Kodo Beasts and Stone Kodo Beasts, which made up a large share of the monster horde, were pushed forward to thicken the wall of Kodo Beasts.
By then, the warriors who had been holding the line against the Silver Kodo Beasts finally saw a glimmer of hope. Under the shouted commands of the Scavenging Qilin, they began their orderly counterattack, sending one Vampire after another straight to hell. Once those Kodo Beasts moved up to reinforce the front, the archers resumed their earlier work and cut down more of the Black Wind Demon Wolves.
My target shifted as well, and I began focusing on the level twenty-one Gale Demon Wolves that the novice fighters could not even break through.
With only three points of magic defense, I could ignore the attacks of the Black Wind Demon Wolves, but I could not resist the damage from the Gale Demon Wolves. Their magic attack had even climbed above fifteen points, and each round of wind blades could inflict around ten points of damage on me.
At that point, my intermediate long-range skill finally came into play.
Once my MP ran dry, I would shoot the Gale Demon Wolf until it was half dead, then endure its wind blades and keep attacking from range with ordinary shots...
As long as I finished the Gale Demon Wolf before my HP sank to the bottom, the water mages behind me would take turns casting Water Heal on me.
Although recovery was slow, it was still much faster than sitting down to rest. A few seconds later, my HP had returned to peak condition.
After that, with the help of the water mages, the pace picked up. A Gale Demon Wolf would go down in just a few exchanges, and at the same time the small number of Silver Kodo Beasts at the front line were basically cleared out...
At that moment, everyone in the valley finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The Stone Kodo Beasts and Adult Kodo Beasts were clearly easier to handle than the Silver Kodo Beasts. The warriors holding the monsters in place only had to stand there and let them batter away; even after a full minute, they would not lose ten HP.
Once the situation stabilized, the people in the valley also began to organize themselves into thirteen ten-man teams. Each team occupied one or two Silver Kodo Beasts at several spawn points in the valley and slowly farmed experience.
Although this pace of leveling was terribly slow, the same old saying still applied: it was better than nothing.
If the wolf pack did not leave for the entire night, these novice fighters might even be able to grind out a level here little by little. After all, the nighttime spawn rate was still fairly good.
The only one who had not joined a team was me. The Silver Kodo Beasts were worth no experience to me at all...
But I did not stop. I remained standing among the Kodo Beasts, letting the beasts leave faint white scratches on my gear that were almost impossible to see with the naked eye, while deliberately drawing my bow and dealing with the nearest Black Wind Demon Wolves.
The level gap between the Black Wind Demon Wolves and me was only five levels, so after deducting the twenty-five-point experience penalty, I could still gain one hundred and twenty-five points of experience. Why not?
Just as we were slowly grinding levels...
A wolf howl suddenly rang out beyond the valley, a voice I knew extremely well. "Ugh! Awooooo!" The cry of the superior beast was filled with fierce authority and rage.
"Gale Demon Wolf King?!"
My heart lurched. Almost instinctively, I put away the Snow-Hiding Bow and stopped attacking.
Good heavens, could it be that the Gale Demon Wolf King knew we were inside slaughtering its underlings?
Damn it, it had better not be angry... I could not afford the blow of falling from heaven back into hell!
The thought had barely surfaced when the people in the valley suddenly noticed in astonishment that the countless magic wolves inside Kodo Beast Valley had all turned at once and surged toward the valley exit like a tidal wave, moving at astonishing speed.
With the wolves retreating, the Kodo Beast Valley, which had been cramped and crowded moments before, instantly became much more spacious. Everyone felt as though the huge stone pressing on their hearts had finally been lifted... but then again...
The sudden withdrawal of the wolf pack made everyone deeply suspicious.
Especially the players who had already been tricked by the wolves before; they insisted over and over that this was some scheme of the Gale Demon Wolf King.
But at that very moment, dense bursts of high-tier area magic and the glow of magical torches suddenly formed a brilliant line outside the valley. Like a massive web of firepower, it sealed off the valley entrance from afar while countless spells flew in neat, dense volleys toward the wolf pack at the mouth of Kodo Beast Valley.
In an instant, Kodo Beast Valley erupted with killing cries.
...
"Great! Someone's come to save us!!"
"Ha ha! We won't have to stay here until dawn anymore! This wolf pack is finished now, isn't it?"
Watching the several players around me grow so excited they were almost beside themselves, I could not feel happy at all. If I was not mistaken, the force outside should be from the Supreme Mercenary Legion.
In my view, there were only a handful of mercenary groups in the entire Kingdom of Knights bold enough to encircle and attack a wolf pack at night, especially one with the Gale Demon Wolf King present. Since this was Azure Frost City, the only ones who could be making a move here were the Supreme Mercenary Legion.
They must have learned from the novices who had died and returned that the wolf pack had left Black Wind Forest and attacked Kodo Beast Valley.
If I were Supreme, I would absolutely not miss this chance to wipe out the wolf pack inside Kodo Beast Valley in one stroke. Besides, in this kind of environment, the Dragon Wolf Knights would have no opportunity to launch a sneak attack.
A thousand third-tier experts launching a direct assault on the wolf pack in a place like Kodo Beast Valley—no matter how powerful the Gale Demon Wolf King was, it could not possibly escape.
Supreme really was decisive.
And precisely because of that decisiveness, I felt an inexplicable sense of crisis... I could not shake the feeling that I might run into War Wolf here...
Just as I was feeling this way, Little Love somehow came to my side. Her beautiful eyes studied me curiously as she asked in a low voice, "You don't seem very happy?"
"I am not just not happy. I am completely unable to be happy..." I gave a wry smile, then, under Little Love's puzzled gaze, roughly told her through private transmission what had happened in Black Wind Forest that afternoon.
After hearing my account, Little Love's little mouth had already formed a wide O. In disbelief, she said, "You mean... today, you almost killed a third-tier expert?"
I gave another bitter smile. A first-tier player nearly killing a third-tier one really was hard to believe. But I did not feel like arguing the point. Instead, I looked back toward Kodo Beast Valley.
For the first time, I found myself desperately hoping that the wolf pack would annihilate the Supreme Mercenary Legion outside and once again surround us.
Unfortunately, the memory of the daytime battle between the Supreme Mercenary Legion and the wolf pack made my heart sink at once. That hope seemed far too unrealistic.
Now all I could do was pray that Supreme's people would not come in... Please, whatever happened, do not come in!!
