“Lucky said it tried to save Lord Shadowless, but unfortunately it couldn’t. Lord Shadowless told it to come back. Now it doesn’t know where he was taken.”

If Wealth-Bringer had still been able to catch Situ’s scent before, now there was not the slightest trace of it.

Luoxia bit her lip hard.

She could not believe this was true.

But in Lucky’s eyes, she saw sorrow.

“Master, I regret to tell you that neither Lucky nor I can smell your presence anymore.”

Luoxia closed her eyes and drew a deep breath.

She could not allow herself to sink into grief like this.

She would turn her sorrow and anger into strength. She had to find Shadowless and rescue him!

When Luoxia opened her eyes again, they were far calmer.

“Miss Luoxia, were you speaking with Lucky just now?” Pang Xiaoyu asked. He had been watching every change in her expression.

Seeing that the sky was growing darker by the minute, Luoxia told Wealth-Bringer to take out the luminous pearl.

The pearl was crystal clear, radiating a soft glow that drove away half the darkness.

“Brother Pang, Lucky says that Shadowless was carried off by the spiders. It doesn’t know where they took him, and now it can’t even catch his scent anymore.”

Luoxia’s voice was quiet and flat.

She was using indifference to conceal her vulnerability.

“What? Brother Shadowless was taken? How could that be?” Pang Qingyu was utterly shocked. Then she said furiously, “Luoxia, you must be making this up! Do you really want Brother Shadowless to have been captured? He treated you so well, and you... you... you... You’re absolutely heartless!”

Luoxia wished she had been imagining things, or that Wealth-Bringer had simply been mistaken.

“At the time, every one of us was attacked by the spiders, including Shadowless’s double. Of course, his double had been disguised. Shadowless himself, however, was not attacked by the spiders.” After hearing Luoxia’s account, Pang Xiaoyu said, “I think that must be connected to the spiders taking him away.”

“Brother, you believe Brother Shadowless was captured too? You believe her?” Pang Qingyu cried in exasperation.

Pang Xiaoyu looked at Luoxia, then nodded. “I trust Shadowless’s judgment.”

Those words completely silenced whatever Pang Qingyu had been about to say.

Luoxia merely nodded. She knew that because of Shadowless, Pang Xiaoyu regarded her with special consideration.

“Spiders don’t eat people, do they?” Luoxia asked.

“Well...” Pang Xiaoyu scratched his head. “They probably don’t.”

But these were level-nine giant spiders. Who could say whether they ate people? If they had eaten Situ, it would certainly have been a tremendous tonic for them. They might even have transformed directly into spirits.

Could they have carried Situ away because they intended to eat him?

“Brother Pang, could you take me to the scene and let me investigate?” Luoxia asked.

“Now?” Pang Xiaoyu hesitated as he looked at the darkening sky.

Luoxia nodded. “I want to see whether we can find any clues.”

“Don’t tell me you know how to solve cases too,” Pang Qingyu said.

“I don’t know how to investigate a case, but I can follow a few traces.”

Seeing that Luoxia was determined, Pang Xiaoyu nodded.

The group pressed onward by the intermittent light of the luminous pearl.

After walking for roughly half an incense stick, they reached the site where Situ Tengyi and the others had fought the spiders earlier that day.

“This is the place. Everyone, be careful. Those two spiders left venom behind. If any of you come into contact with it and are poisoned, you’ll be in serious trouble,” Pang Xiaoyu warned them.

Everyone understood.

Luoxia crouched down and used a dead branch to lift the venom the spiders had left on the ground.
