Chapter 59: The Ugly Do Not Cause Trouble
This Violet Lightning Formation was truly formidable. Even with the combined efforts of Ou Jinyun and his two companions, they found themselves unable to break through it for the time being. Their excessive use of supernatural abilities left all three exhausted. Hurriedly, they each took out the Qingming Pills they had prepared beforehand and swallowed them. The energy they had so rapidly depleted was restored by more than half in an instant.
Seeing that the time was right, Yun Lianqiao appeared together with Monkey San and Tao Mufeng, positioning themselves behind Ou Jinyun and his companions to lend their support. “This Violet Lightning Formation is indeed impressive. Allow us to give you a hand,” Yun Lianqiao said.
The moment Ou Jinyun saw Yun Lianqiao, his heart sank. They had already spent a considerable amount of their energy battling the formation and were physically spent. Yun Lianqiao and her group, however, were still fresh. Once the six of them broke the formation, if Yun Lianqiao decided to intervene and seize the Violet Lightning Grass for herself, there would be nothing he and his companions could do to stop her.
The three brothers from the Ou family wanted to withdraw, but Yun Lianqiao smiled. “Brother Jinyun, to give up now would be to let all your efforts go to waste.” With that, she gave Ou Jinyun a push, and Monkey San and Tao Mufeng followed suit, shoving the three brothers into the pit, right into the range of the Violet Lightning Formation.
Faint arcs of violet lightning twisted and coiled like a serpent of purple light, surging toward the three with alarming speed. The brothers had no choice but to muster their powers again to withstand the onslaught of the formation, while Yun Lianqiao and her companions, standing above the pit, joined their strength to attack the formation as well.
With all six working together, their combined force surged. The two powers collided violently—a resounding crash, sparks and lightning flying, dust rising in thick clouds.
When silence finally fell, the formation of violet lightning surrounding the Violet Lightning Grass abruptly vanished.
Though Ou Jinyun and his companions had managed to survive, their hearts were steeped in disappointment. It was now painfully obvious that Yun Lianqiao and her group outmatched them. There was no longer any hope that the Violet Lightning Grass would end up in their hands.
“Brother Jinyun, we truly must thank you for your help this time,” Yun Lianqiao said, her red lips curved in a faint smile, her phoenix-like eyes lifted in triumph as she looked at Ou Jinyun.
Ou Jinyun cursed, “Wretched woman! This Violet Lightning Grass was clearly found by me, and we were the first to try to harvest it. On what grounds do you steal it? Are you not afraid of becoming a laughingstock to all the world?”
Hearing Ou Jinyun’s outburst, Ou Xinlai could only roll his eyes in exasperation. When it came to matters between Ou Xinya and herself, Ou Jinyun was always so clever. Why, then, did all that cleverness seem to vanish when dealing with this venomous beauty Yun Lianqiao?
Sure enough, Yun Lianqiao replied coldly, “It doesn’t matter—dead men tell no tales.” For a single stalk of Violet Lightning Immortal Grass, they were more than willing to kill.
Ou Jinshen’s face turned pale, and he spoke in a conciliatory tone: “Though the Violet Lightning Grass is rare, had you three not arrived just now, we would likely have been destroyed by the formation. Therefore, the grass is rightfully yours.” Yet in his heart, he could not resign himself to giving it up.
If Ou Jinyun hadn’t come across it, they might never have seen such a wondrous herb in their lifetimes.
But, compared to the Violet Lightning Immortal Grass, nothing was more precious than their own lives. Survival came first. As long as they lived, there would always be a chance to reclaim the grass.
Ou Jinshen was a clever man, but unfortunately, Yun Lianqiao and her companions were not fools either.
Tao Muliu smiled. “So we let you live, and then spend every moment guarding against you snatching the grass back, or perhaps spreading word of what happened here?”
Ou Jinren was trembling with rage. These three bandits not only wanted to rob them of the Violet Lightning Immortal Grass, but also intended to take their lives. Was there anyone more shameless in the world?
“Kill the three of them and then take the Violet Lightning Grass!” Monkey San’s thoughts were wholly consumed by the desire for the herb. That rare, enchanting violet glow had bewitched him; he wished only to claim the prize for himself and had no patience for further nonsense with the Ou brothers.
“Are you truly set on murder?” Just as Yun Lianqiao’s group prepared to finish off Ou Jinyun and his companions, Ou Xinlai finally appeared, sauntering in with an air of leisure.
“Ou Xinlai!” At the sight of her, Ou Jinwu’s eyes lit up, though the hope flickered and died almost instantly. Everyone in the Ou family knew that Ou Xinlai was a talentless weakling. Even with her arrival, she would only add another corpse to Yun Lianqiao’s tally.
“So you’re from the Ou family!” At the mention of Ou Xinlai’s name, a murderous gleam flashed in Yun Lianqiao’s eyes. Seeing her face, Yun Lianqiao’s anger only deepened. “You ugly wretch, what are you doing here? It’s not your fault you were born ugly, but coming out and frightening people is most certainly your fault!”
Ou Xinlai almost laughed out loud, starting to wonder whether Yun Lianqiao was, like her, someone who didn’t belong in this world. “My appearance hardly affects you. Frighten people? I hardly think the two gentlemen with you are so easily startled.”
Not only were they unafraid, but Ou Xinlai even fancied she saw a hint of amazement in their eyes!
Three black lines seemed to appear above Ou Xinlai’s head. Fine, perhaps she wasn’t the ugliest, but she was certainly far from beautiful. That birthmark on her left temple alone was enough to mar her appearance.
What she did not know was that, in the eyes of others, it was not the crimson birthmark on her temple that drew the most attention, but rather the extraordinary brilliance of her eyes. A single glance, and one would be deeply captivated. Apart from the birthmark, her face was quite pleasing.
Thus, her eyes not only compensated for the blemish, but made her remarkably attractive. Once someone’s gaze met those jewel-like eyes, the birthmark faded into insignificance; the more they looked, the more agreeable—even beautiful—she seemed.
As for Yun Lianqiao, beautiful and proud, what irked her most was that she didn’t find Ou Xinlai’s birthmark unsightly at all. Instead, she found it oddly pleasing!
An ugly woman should look ugly; she should be self-abasing, an object of everyone’s disdain!
