All along the way, Chen Yage walked anxiously, unsure of where Li Bai might be now, or whether he had been injured. Without realizing it, Yue Ji stopped in front of a lone pavilion suspended in the air. She cast a disdainful glance at Chen Yage, then spoke to Du Juan, “If the young master asks why you haven’t visited for so many days, just say you’ve been ill and recuperating these past months, never leaving your room. Do you understand?”
Yue Ji’s gaze was cold; it was less a conversation than an order. Du Juan trembled as she looked at Yue Ji, nodding in response. Yue Ji showed no regard for Chen Yage, and Chen Yage was even less inclined to pay Yue Ji any mind. Since she had come all this way, why not see what lay ahead? Besides, Chen Yage was filled with curiosity about the pavilion hidden among the verdant trees, much like Columbus discovering the New World.
The pavilion was perched halfway up the mountain, surrounded by vast swathes of blooming peach blossoms, reminiscent of a blush on a beauty’s cheek—exquisite and alluring. Chen Yage stepped onto the stone path, each step as careful as walking on thin ice. What sort of man was it that Du Juan and Yue Ji both feared so deeply?
Just as Chen Yage was about to ascend the stairs, a ghostly hand seized her throat. She was struck speechless; did everyone here have a penchant for strangling, as if they had all been hanged in a previous life? She struggled desperately, but her resistance was as insignificant as an ant before this woman.
Turning her head with effort, Chen Yage was astonished to find it was a woman in red who held her throat. The woman appeared to be around twenty, with elegant brows and phoenix-like eyes, skin smooth as porcelain, lips pressed firmly together, and a gaze as cold and murderous as a winter pond.
Indeed, all beautiful women are venomous!
Just as Chen Yage felt herself teetering on the threshold of the underworld, Yue Ji approached the woman and said respectfully, “Miss, please show mercy!”
The woman paused, then cast a contemptuous look at Yue Ji, replying coldly, “Do you not know the rules of Peach Grove?”
Yue Ji lowered her head, unable to respond. The rules of Peach Grove were clear: outsiders were never permitted entry, and if anyone trespassed, death was certain.
Water Buffalo and Du Juan saw Yue Ji’s silence and exchanged helpless glances, unsure what to do. Chen Yage realized that Yue Ji held a special status, and since she cared for Water Buffalo, perhaps Water Buffalo’s plea would sway her. She signaled Water Buffalo, who understood and pleaded with the woman in red, “Miss, please spare Yage!”
Unexpectedly, the woman was unmoved. She snorted coldly and tightened her grip, leaving Chen Yage to cry out for help in vain. Yet she did not abandon her will to survive, continuing her desperate struggle.
At that moment, a clear voice rang out, “Zi Yu, release her!”
Zi Yu was the woman in red strangling Chen Yage. She hesitated, confused, and asked, “Brother, trespassing in Peach Grove is a capital offense. We cannot show leniency or break the rules.”
The man was none other than the black-clad Ziye whom Chen Yage had rescued by the river. He descended the stairs and approached the group. Upon seeing Ziye, Chen Yage stood dumbfounded. “Why are you here?” she asked in bewilderment.
Her question deepened the confusion among everyone except Du Juan, who rushed over to Ziye, took his arm, and called softly with a radiant smile, “Young Master, Young Master...”
Ziye smiled, gently stroking Du Juan’s face, then walked over to Chen Yage with a complicated expression. He grasped her chin, forcing her to look him in the eye, and spoke coldly, “Why are you here?”
“Can’t you see I was brought here against my will?” Chen Yage replied irritably. So the man she had saved was none other than the young master Yue Ji referred to, the “young master” in Du Juan’s words. She sighed inwardly, “Heavens, just what kind of person have you made me save? Please, King of Hell, if you must shorten a life, let it be his and not mine. After all, I brought him back from the brink—charging him a little interest wouldn’t be too much!”
