Chapter Seventeen: The Formation
“Teacher, you’re finally awake.”
After calming his emotions, Ye Cheng discreetly glanced at Ye Ming beside him. Seeing that the latter hadn’t noticed his earlier expression, he quietly sighed in relief and thought to himself.
“Heh, so you missed this old man, or do you have another problem that requires my help?” Mu Lao’s teasing voice echoed boundlessly in Ye Cheng’s mind.
“Mm,” Ye Cheng responded inwardly, neither confirming nor denying. Mu Lao had once expended his own soul power for Ye Cheng, falling into a deep sleep, which made Ye Cheng feel both grateful and concerned. Moreover, Ye Ling’s cultivation problem seemed to be something only Mu Lao could discern.
But for now, Ye Ling’s issue would have to wait until after the end of the Martial Scripture Pavilion. Then, he’d discuss it with Mu Lao.
“Teacher, are you alright?” Remembering how Mu Lao had been so weakened that he had to recover through sleep, Ye Cheng asked in his heart.
After a brief silence, Mu Lao finally spoke, “I’ve just used up some energy, nothing serious. Besides, your performance just now was good. You didn’t disappoint me.”
Ye Cheng was taken aback. “So Teacher had already awakened.” If not for encountering this strange stone door, perhaps Teacher wouldn’t have spoken so soon.
As he pondered this, Ye Cheng immediately recalled the two words Mu Lao had mentioned earlier. He asked in his mind, “By the way, Teacher, you said ‘formation’ just now. Does this stone door have a formation?”
Ye Cheng had read brief introductions to formations in ancient books. They were constructed from special materials with ingenious layouts, forming mysterious defensive arrays, offensive arrays, and other wondrous formations.
“Indeed, this is just a basic defensive formation. The stone door is the core; once the door is pushed, the formation activates automatically,” Mu Lao explained.
Upon hearing this, Ye Cheng understood. After pushing the stone door, the formation had activated to block entry. No wonder the door was easy enough to find; it concealed a deeper secret. Clearly, one needed a method to break through in order to enter the third layer, and only the patriarch of the Ye family likely possessed it.
It made sense—such an important place naturally needed protection.
“Teacher, with your experience, you must know how to break it?” Ye Cheng asked.
Mu Lao chuckled. “This is a resonance formation. The red light screen you saw has a certain frequency. You need only adjust your own blood energy to match the formation’s frequency, and you can pass through. But only someone at the peak of blood energy can freely control their own frequency—you’re far from that level.”
“Control my blood energy frequency?” Ye Cheng’s lips twitched. To control the frequency of his own blood energy’s fluctuations? What a joke—that was no easy feat. “Is there no other way?”
“There is, of course. You could break it by force, but without strength at the Ancient Pill realm, it’s impossible,” Mu Lao said.
Ye Cheng couldn’t help but smile wryly. In the end, it all came down to insufficient strength. Both methods required abilities he clearly did not possess. But Mu Lao’s next words transformed Ye Cheng’s bitter expression into one of wild joy.
“Though you can’t break it, with me here, it won’t be a problem.” There was a hint of playful teasing in Mu Lao’s words.
Looking at Ye Cheng’s delighted face, Mu Lao smiled slightly and instructed, “Close your eyes and press your hand against the red light shield. Don’t move it. I’ll control your blood energy and adjust its frequency.”
Ye Cheng frowned slightly. “Do I need to do anything?”
“Nothing at all. Just stay still and watch. Leave everything else to me.”
Ye Cheng nodded gently and, following Mu Lao’s instructions, stretched out his palm. The red light screen appeared again. He pressed his hand against the shield and waited quietly for Mu Lao’s action.
Moments later, Ye Cheng felt a mysterious power flow from the jade at his neck into his body. As the power entered, every part of his body surged with astonishing blood energy, which, beyond his control, converged toward the mysterious force.
Bang, bang, bang...
That mysterious power began to vibrate at a strange, elusive frequency. As it did, Ye Cheng’s blood energy seemed to react in chain, rippling in tandem. Invisible waves spread out from Ye Cheng’s body.
He could clearly sense his blood energy matching the formation’s erratic frequency as his hand pressed against the shield.
Wave after wave of invisible force radiated from Ye Cheng, entering the formation and being reflected back. The cycle continued, and the repulsion from the red shield gradually diminished.
Pop.
Suddenly, a suction force came from the formation. Ye Cheng’s body was pulled in, passing through the red light shield in an instant.
“Huh? Cheng, how did you get inside?” Ye Ming immediately noticed Ye Cheng vanish into the red light, calling out to him.
Ye Ming stood outside the shield, mouth moving, as if speaking, but no sound reached Ye Cheng.
“This formation has a sound isolation effect. All outside voices are blocked,” Mu Lao explained.
Ye Cheng nodded, gesturing to Ye Ming that he couldn’t hear him. Ye Ming understood and nodded back.
Ignoring Ye Ming outside, Ye Cheng stepped onto the stone steps, ascending toward the third layer, leaving Ye Ming waiting outside.
...
As he moved forward, Ye Cheng conversed with Mu Lao in his mind: “Teacher, why didn’t you bring Ye Ming in too?”
“You’re usually sharp, but how come you’re so muddle-headed now? Absentmindedly pulling that kid in, with my current state, is impossible,” Mu Lao scolded with a smile, then changed the subject: “By the way, was the formation laid by your family’s elders?”
“Not sure,” Ye Cheng shook his head honestly. He’d only heard about the third layer occasionally from his third uncle, and knew nothing about such a formation. He’d only heard that one elder in the Ye family could arrange formations.
“Perhaps it’s a legacy from your ancestors. If your family had a master of formations, many clans would be eager to ally with the Ye family, and you wouldn’t be confined to this small town,” Mu Lao speculated.
At the top of the steps, a brown door appeared. Ye Cheng didn’t respond to Mu Lao’s guesses but reached out, pressing his hand against the door.
With a push, the brown door to the third layer slowly opened...
