Chapter 18: Lin Dawei Married Off to a Fool
Could Lin Dawei really be so kind-hearted? Of course not.
Ever since childhood, whenever he saw Lin Xiaodou, he called her “Ugly Freak.” Today was the first time he’d ever called her “sister.” The reason was simple—he’d added a little something to the meat, prepared especially for Lin Xiaodou. There was no visible effect yet, but after three to five hours, in the dead of night, she’d fall into a deep coma.
Lin Dawei was already anticipating what would happen to Lin Xiaodou tonight. Feeling pleased, he finally deigned to call her “sister.” Seeing that Lin Xiaodou was still standing in place, Mother Lin grew impatient.
“What are you standing there for? Come eat!”
Pork at the supply and marketing agency cost 80 cents a pound, and you still needed a meat coupon. Such expensive dishes were rarely eaten—only during the New Year or major holidays would they buy meat. To ensure tonight’s plan succeeded, Mother Lin had spared no expense, though her heart ached over it.
“Yes, Xiaodou, come have dinner. Your mother made braised pork,” Father Lin said, wearing a kind and gentle expression. In Lin Xiaodou’s memory, he rarely spoke to her so kindly; he was usually cold and indifferent. Clearly, the whole family was putting on a performance tonight to confuse her.
Since the stage was set, how could she not play her part?
“Alright,” Lin Xiaodou replied, smiling as she walked over. As soon as she sat down, she pulled the plate of glossy, fragrant pork belly in front of herself, took a piece with her chopsticks, and, under everyone’s watchful gaze, put it in her mouth.
“Mmm! Delicious!” Lin Xiaodou nodded as she ate hungrily.
Father and Mother Lin exchanged glances, a flash of satisfaction in their eyes. Success! All that remained was to wait for the action tonight. The couple could hardly contain their delight.
What they didn’t know was that the pork belly, laced with something special, had no effect on Lin Xiaodou whatsoever. Ever since she’d taken the Divine Power Strengthening Pill, her constitution had changed completely—she was now immune to all poisons. Such a trivial thing was nothing to her; even deadly toxins would likely have no effect.
And to be fair, though Mother Lin was lacking in character, her cooking skills were quite decent. With rice, Lin Xiaodou quickly polished off the whole plate of pork belly. After she finished, she returned to her room without another word to anyone.
Mother Lin gritted her teeth and grumbled, “That wretched girl sure can eat—half a pound of meat! If it weren’t for…”
“That’s enough,” Father Lin interrupted. “Don’t say too much. Tonight’s matter is what’s important.”
Lin Dawei immediately chimed in, “Dad, let me help out tonight too.” He wanted to see that wretched girl suffer with his own eyes.
“No,” Father Lin refused flatly. He had purposely hired outsiders for tonight’s plan to avoid any family involvement. Dawei was too impulsive and unsuitable for such matters.
Worried his son would feel left out, Father Lin soothed him: “Just go to bed early tonight. Tomorrow morning, we’ll go watch the fun.”
Hearing this, Lin Dawei’s gloom vanished. “Alright! Got it!”
After dinner, Mother Lin did the dishes, Father Lin went to his room to change his bandages, and Lin Dawei, bored, wandered around the house. Suddenly, his eyes darted slyly. Seeing his parents weren’t paying attention, he hurried over to knock on Lin Xiaodou’s door.
“Sis, open up!”
Inside, Lin Xiaodou’s eyes lit up. She’d just been thinking of how to lure Lin Dawei into her room, but hadn’t expected him to come on his own. Since he was delivering himself, how could she refuse?
Suppressing her excitement, Lin Xiaodou opened the door with a cold expression. “What is it?”
“Nothing, just wanted to tell you that you’ve been pretty cocky lately. Better watch your back when you go out.” Though Lin Dawei was smiling, his eyes brimmed with malicious glee.
Ugly freak, after tonight, you’ll never have another peaceful day. Just wait and see.
Hearing this, Lin Xiaodou raised an eyebrow. Clearly, he’d come to gloat, convinced tonight’s plan was foolproof. No wonder Father Lin hadn’t let him participate—his impulsiveness would only ruin things.
“Thank you for the reminder,” Lin Xiaodou replied, pretending not to understand, and even welcomed him into her room.
Then, she took a sponge cake from her bedside table and started eating in front of Lin Dawei. He couldn’t stand it—having always been selfish and with a sweet tooth. Tonight, Lin Xiaodou seemed approachable, nothing like a madwoman, which emboldened him.
He snatched the cake from her hand. Seeing Lin Xiaodou offer no resistance, he felt as if things were back to how they’d always been. Chewing the cake, his expression turned fierce.
“Ugly freak, where did you get the money for such a fancy treat? Hand it over, or I’ll tell Mom!”
Lin Xiaodou sneered. “Go ahead and tell her.”
“You’re not afraid I’ll—huh? What’s happening… why do I feel so dizzy…”
Lin Dawei had barely started to threaten her when his head suddenly spun and his vision blurred. Finally, under Lin Xiaodou’s smiling gaze, he collapsed to the floor.
“Hmph!” Lin Xiaodou gave him a couple of kicks, stripped him, dressed him in her own clothes, then wrapped a scarf around his head and face, bundled him in the quilt, and tossed him onto the bed.
Then, while Father and Mother Lin weren’t paying attention, she slipped into Lin Dawei’s room, burrowed under the covers, and made it look as if she’d gone to bed early.
After washing the dishes, Mother Lin did peek in to check. Seeing her “son” already asleep, she left quietly without disturbing him.
In the darkness, Lin Xiaodou smiled. Everything was ready. Now, let the show begin!
...
Two o’clock in the morning.
Three burly men crept into the Lin family home. Hired from the black market by Father Lin, they specialized in underhanded work. Before contacting them, Father Lin had disguised himself, not wanting to leave any evidence that could be traced back to him.
When paying them, his story was that he had a grievance with Old Lin’s daughter—Lin Xiaodou—and wanted them to teach her a lesson. To be sure, he emphasized that Lin Xiaodou was neglected in her family and lived in the corner storeroom. She was also afraid of water, so the plan was to take her to the riverbank at West City Park in the middle of the night and leave her there—she’d be terrified.
At the thought of easy money for such a simple task, the three thugs quickly agreed. What they didn’t know was this was only the first part—more was to come.
Widow Liu lived near West City Park. She and the fool would be waiting. Once the person was delivered, they’d secretly take her home and force a consummation. Then, in the morning, Father and Mother Lin would “find” Lin Xiaodou at Widow Liu’s place under the pretense of searching for their daughter. Thus, Lin Xiaodou’s reputation would be ruined, leaving her no choice but to marry the fool.
Father Lin’s plan was thorough and well thought out. He never expected that the joke he intended for Lin Xiaodou would ultimately befall his precious son.
...
In the darkness, one man led the way, while the other two carried a figure bundled in a quilt. The trio hurried toward West City Park.
One of them, panting heavily, swore, “Damn, why is this woman so heavy? I’m exhausted.”
The leader asked, “Are you sure we’ve got the right person?”
Another replied, “Should be. I heard the girl’s face is disfigured and she even wears a scarf to bed. This one has one too.”
“Fine, let’s hurry up. As long as we get paid.”
Thirty minutes later, the figure wrapped in the quilt was dumped by the riverbank at West City Park.
Soon after, two figures emerged from the shadows nearby. One was pushing a cart—it was Widow Liu. She quickly loaded the person onto the cart and, with the fool in tow, hurried home.
As soon as they got inside, the fool began clamoring for the wedding night.
“Wife!”
No one had even seen who was under the covers. Drooling, he pounced forward…
