Chapter 135: One Day, I Will Let You Go Too

Xiao Jingyao had a particularly vivid impression of Blackstone Village.
Several months ago, around New Year’s Day, two villagers from Blackstone Village—Han Guoqiang and Chu Ling—had been abducted to a cave by a criminal gang and subjected to inhuman abuse.
Afterward, every member of that gang had been killed.
The day before, the gang’s remaining members had also all been burned to death in a small courtyard.
The women who had escaped after being trafficked unanimously claimed that a great hero had rescued them.
Nearly twenty people had died in the space of a few days, and the matter had quickly attracted the attention of the authorities.
His superiors had assigned him to assist the local police station with the investigation, but after two months, he had not found the slightest lead.
That so-called great hero had vanished without a trace and never appeared again.
It was the first time Xiao Jingyao had ever felt so utterly defeated.
After returning to the county public security bureau, he had remained dispirited for quite some time.
Now, whenever he saw Blackstone Village, something stirred within him.
Lin Xiaodou was from that village as well.
Could there be some connection between the two?
After thinking it over carefully, Xiao Jingyao decided that it was unlikely.
Lin Xiaodou was only an eighteen-year-old girl. She possessed unusual strength and had something of a fiery temper.
But asking her to kill people—and so many of them at that—was probably beyond her. Even if she were scared out of her wits, she would never dare do such a thing.
Besides, everyone had said that a male comrade had rescued them.
Lin Xiaodou was far too beautiful. No matter how thoroughly she disguised herself, she would inevitably have been exposed.
Therefore, Lin Xiaodou absolutely could not be that so-called heroic comrade.
No matter how hard Xiao Jingyao racked his brains, he could never have imagined that human-skin masks existed in this world.
Returning to the matter of the enemy agent, the information provided by his superiors stated that one had infiltrated the pig farm, intending to recruit the suffering inmates serving reeducation through labor.
Lin Xiaodou had been recommended by the captain of Blackstone Village’s production brigade. Her background was thoroughly known, so logically, she would not be involved in such things either.
Xiao Jingyao immediately ruled Lin Xiaodou out as a suspect.
“Director Hu, you go ahead and get on with your work. I’ll take another look.”
After that, Xiao Jingyao carefully examined the personnel records of everyone at the pig farm.
By the end of the day, his eyes were sore from reading, yet he still had not found anyone suspicious.
“Looks like I’ll have to visit each area and interact with those people personally before I can make a judgment.”
Rubbing the back of his neck, Xiao Jingyao left the office.
By the time he reached the cafeteria, everyone was eating dinner.
Xiao Jingyao had only been on the job for a day and did not know anyone yet, so he simply found a seat near the entrance and sat down.

He had barely taken a few bites when a commotion broke out at the cafeteria entrance.
Since he was sitting so close, Xiao Jingyao was unwillingly treated to the entire spectacle.
It was Zhu Qingqing, making a great fuss and sobbing hysterically.
Her family had come to take her home, but she refused to go. She was sitting on the ground, wailing at the top of her lungs.
From what Xiao Jingyao could gather, she had declared that unless her family agreed to let her date Xu Mo, the inmate serving reeducation through labor, she would never return home again.
She was relying on her family’s indulgence to make demands without the slightest restraint.
Xiao Jingyao: ...
He had never been in a relationship and did not really understand the thought processes of women.
Still, he was rather curious about this Xu Mo.
What kind of charm did the man possess to make a girl so devoted that she was willing to abandon even her parents for him?
The next day, Xiao Jingyao met Xu Mo.
At first glance, he felt that the man was nothing special.
A grown man carrying a load of pig manure had to stop and rest several times on the way.
By contrast, the fool working alongside him—Big Fool Niu—was covered in pig manure from head to toe, yet moved several times faster than Xu Mo.
Because of his profession, Xiao Jingyao had a sharp eye and keen powers of observation.
He saw through Xu Mo’s little tricks at a glance.
The man had a bit of cleverness, and nothing more.
The supervisor was probably somewhat wary of Xu Mo’s relationship with Zhu Qingqing, which was why he turned a blind eye to his behavior.
If he truly chose to enforce the rules strictly, Xu Mo’s days would not be pleasant.
The relationship between the two had not even been made official, yet Xu Mo already dared to slack off so openly. Xiao Jingyao could not imagine where he found the nerve.
As for the fool—Big Fool Niu—
A man who spent all day picking his nose and playing with pig manure was hardly worth analyzing.
He had essentially been eliminated from the list of suspects.
Xiao Jingyao did not stay long. He still had to patrol the other areas.
Once he had left, Xu Mo rose from his seat in the shade and slowly walked over to Big Fool Niu.
“That patrolman named Xiao Jingyao was watching you for quite a while just now. You’d better be careful~”
Big Fool Niu gave him a foolish grin.
As if he had not understood a word, he repeated Xu Mo’s words.
“Careful! Careful!”
The corners of Xu Mo’s lips lifted slightly, forming a mocking smile.
“Stop pretending. You’re not actually stupid. We’ve shared a room for so long that I noticed it ages ago.”
Big Fool Niu shook his head and grinned, extending his hands—both smeared with pig manure—toward him.
“Eat! Eat!”

“Get away! That’s disgusting!”
Xu Mo backed away several steps, his face full of disgust. He scrutinized Big Fool Niu coldly.
“I don’t know why you’re pretending to be stupid, but don’t interfere with my plans. Otherwise, I’ll expose you!”
Although his family had suffered a calamity, his deceptive appearance had allowed him to avoid much hardship along the way.
When he was sent down to the pig farm this time, his original target had been Lin Xiaodou.
The woman was simply too beautiful; he had spotted her immediately in the crowd.
But before he had even made a move, that foolish woman Zhu Qingqing had thrown herself at him.
At first, he had genuinely been using her. But after spending these past few days together, he had somehow begun to develop feelings for her.
The girl was foolish and innocent. Every time she looked at him, her eyes shone with such brightness that he could not help feeling strangely satisfied.
Over the past two days, rumors about the two of them dating had spread everywhere.
At first, he had been somewhat angry, but after thinking it over the previous night, he realized that it might not be a bad thing.
He had heard Zhu Qingqing say that her family was fairly well-off.
If their relationship were exposed ahead of time, it might force her to make a more consequential choice. When the time came, she could pull him up along with her.
Zhu Qingqing would definitely choose him. Xu Mo had complete confidence in himself.
At this critical juncture, he would not allow anything else to go wrong.
“Don’t let anyone discover the truth. Take care of yourself.”
With that, Xu Mo turned and left.
He did only what benefited him.
As for everything else, he would not concern himself with it.
In any case, he had long since despaired of this rotten world.
If not for the sake of revenge, he would never have continued dragging out his miserable existence.
The moment Xu Mo disappeared, the foolish smile vanished from Big Fool Niu’s face, replaced by a heavy, somber expression.
He had not expected that, despite pretending to be this thoroughly, Xu Mo would still see through his disguise.
But then again... Xu Mo had noticed long ago that something was wrong with him, yet had not reported him.
Whatever Xu Mo’s intentions might be, Big Fool Niu would remember this favor.
At that thought, Big Fool Niu narrowed his eyes, his expression turning solemn.
“Kid, since you spared me this time, I’ll spare you once in return someday...”
