Volume One, Chapter 49: Farewell
Yet everyone in the Su family knew in their hearts that Su Ningxia was not likely to return. The odds of a young intellectual sent down to the countryside being allowed back to the city were slim to none; it was almost impossible. Su Ningxia was destined to be trapped in that small patch of land for the rest of her days—she might even end up marrying a local farmer, living out her life with him, and bearing a brood of children! Just the thought of it made Father Su's face turn green.
"Our little Xue has a bright future; this money ought to go to her!" Mother Su sighed softly. "Let the third child go and see her off. After all, the journey is long, and in the future, at least he can write to let us know she's safe." After all, she had raised Ningxia for so many years—how could she simply not be saddened by her departure?
As for Su...
"Very well, our purpose here is to learn and take inspiration. We’d like to visit the training grounds and observe the drills!" Xiao Wei declared.
Following this, Jue Ji, Pu Tou, and the others all agreed to send troops, and in the end, Tan Shihuai assembled a terrifying force of two hundred and twenty thousand soldiers! Tan Shihuai, imitating the Han people, held a somewhat awkward rally at the foot of Mount Danhan. The Xianbei were beside themselves with excitement, and the entire mountain was awash in a sea of joy.
That tree splintered with a crack; though it did not fall, a section of the trunk was deeply caved in, leaving it perilously unstable.
"I am strong and able! General, please take me under your command!" A middle-aged man rolled up his sleeves, baring his muscles.
Having undergone several transformations, the ancient Bear King had identified Qiu Luo's range of activity. In order to continue gathering reliable intelligence from within their ranks, he persisted with his disguised reconnaissance, probing with great care. But his actions attracted the attention of the Persian populace, who reported the matter to General Zhemeng, the chief attendant to the Great Leader of Qiu Luo.
Of these eighty-three people, some hailed from Los Angeles, others from various parts of the United States. There were those involved with firearms, prostitution, and drugs; there were smugglers, robbers, entrepreneurs—an array of backgrounds, truly a mix of dragons and serpents.
After a cursory glance, Guo Nianfei was already moving past. Yet suddenly her expression changed; she took two steps back and returned to the slab of raw jade. The jade's surface was promising, with two distinct python bands, but at the edge of the bands, there was a clear sign of rot.
The massacre's bloodshed sent the frenzied Gale Legion into a state of wild fervor. The four squads of hounds seemed to possess a human intelligence; they ignored Jumen and Wuqu, instead scattering in all directions.
As Snake Lord finished speaking, the medicine cauldron burst open with a bang. Next, a shaft of black light shot out, hurtling directly toward Guo Nianfei.
"You!" Infuriated by Wan Ying, Qin Ming's face flushed red as he seized her throat with all his might.
Meanwhile, Li Zhentian and the monk Kongming were locked in a deadlock, but the Grand Elder, accompanied by three other elders, slaughtered the reinforcements from the Qianzhong Sect, leaving them utterly routed.
Chen Guanxi shot Fatty Guo a glance. Though he had no idea what mischief the fellow was plotting, he trusted him nonetheless. After all, as the saying goes, it takes a scoundrel to deal with a scoundrel, and Fatty Guo was no saint himself, especially after the underhanded way he ran his live broadcasts.
Then Lu Ao and Tianlong led the way into the cave. But as soon as the two entered, Yan Feng was startled to find that their forms and auras had vanished entirely from her spiritual perception.
The Xuanjia Cavalry was a Tang dynasty unit. Zhang Yi knew little about them, except that Li Shimin had founded the force, and that it was formidable. Its main commanders—Qin Qiong, Cheng Zhijie, Yuchi Gong, and Zhai Changsun—had helped Li Shimin triumph in many battles.
"We? Have you found other shipgirls?" Yan Feng noticed Prince of Wales's phrasing and asked.
"Can't you get all the facts straight before jumping to conclusions?" Li Changsheng met the raging gaze of Du Feiyun unflinchingly.
Ever since war had engulfed southwestern Europe, Eric had developed a habit of poring over maps daily, sometimes spending an entire day holed up in his office.
"Another opponent? But the outcome will not change." The contemporary Battle Demon Wolf Emperor sneered, paying Yan Feishuang no heed at all.
At the very least, it could be confirmed that Yuudachi had indeed charged valiantly into the U-country fleet, disrupting their formation and engaging five of their ships, damaging the light cruiser Juno in the process.
In the end, Cao Chun was surrounded at Fengqiu by Ma Chao and the newly arrived Xue Rengui, each leading cavalry assaults on the Tiger and Leopard Cavalry. This was the best opportunity to destroy them, and Xue Rengui certainly would not let Cao Chun escape.
"Li Xin? Why are you asking about her?" I couldn't help feeling somewhat partial toward Li Xin and was reluctant to answer.
In contrast to Su Xia's enthusiastic hospitality, Gu Dong refused to eat anything, which was not unusual. Su Xia simply helped herself without restraint.
The shattering of the teleportation stone troubled him. He feared it might be connected to the link between the Nine Realms Continent and this side. He had already dispatched people to all the major cultivation sects to inquire whether their teleportation stones had suffered any mishaps. Now, he could only hope it was a flaw in the stone itself.
I gazed at Zhang Ruiran with bright, piercing eyes, pointedly ignoring his earlier remark about my supposed ill intentions.
Although Wu Yu couldn't be sure there was anything truly amiss with Xue Han, he couldn't shake the feeling that this girl was far from simple.
Among their group, they could be considered experts, but that was only because the older generation paid no heed to worldly affairs. Now, even if the elders intervened, they could do nothing against Si She, who was now every bit as powerful as Yu Long.
Next, the big screen displayed the bid floor price provided by the Jiang family, causing both Gu Dong and Anthony's faces to change.
Strangely enough, no one knew what kind of talisman Yu Chen had given, but as soon as it was affixed to the four-eyed ghost infant, the infant's mouth still formed a wailing shape, yet no sound emerged, as if Yu Chen's talisman had rendered it mute.
With a dragon's roar, Wu Qimeng's golden dragon swooped down from the heavens and returned to the Longinus Spear she had planted in the ground. Wu Qimeng, pale as a ghost, sat on the ground with her eyes closed, regulating her breath. The dragon's release had nearly exhausted her strength, and she had no choice but to recall it.
Casting a sorrowful glance at Luo Shiji, Chu Ba said, "Radish, I only advised you out of respect for our long rivalry. Since you won't listen, so be it. Mo Yang, do as you see fit." With that, he turned his attention away, ready to enjoy the spectacle.
Chai Hua held Zhang Ruiqing captive. Though the dozens of others dared not approach, neither did they disperse; they continued to encircle Chai Hua's group.
Overcome by excitement, he had failed to observe his surroundings carefully or consider the consequences of his actions, thus falling into the enemy's trap.
"What a mess this is," Mo Xiaosheng muttered to himself. Still, he was relieved that Park Hye did not associate him with the highway bandits, which was a small comfort.
Let us not forget, this was only the first round of bidding! Everyone was holding back. For now, things were simple—it was all about probing the opponent's bottom line.
Mo Shaofeng still wore his ingratiating smile. No matter how many things Liang Fanxin had done to infuriate him, she was now someone he dared not provoke. Not only that, he had to go out of his way to please her, since he still had many matters that would require her help in the future.
