Chapter 58 A Surprise for Grandparents
"Oh?" Lin Qianfan raised an eyebrow. "What do you think I would do to him?"
"You had better not harbor any improper thoughts," Lin Jiayuan stared at him, his gaze sharp. "Otherwise, don't blame me for being impolite."
Lin Qianfan sneered. "Impolite? Since when have you ever been polite to me?"
Lin Jiayuan's expression grew even darker, and he said coldly, "It seems you've learned to talk back."
"Don't think I don't know how poorly you've been getting by out there all these years."
Pausing for a moment, he continued with a threat, "If I were to cut off your living expenses and tuition fees, how much longer could you last?"
Lin Qianfan couldn't help laughing out loud. "Tuition? Living expenses?"
"Mr. Lin, it seems you've never actually provided those things."
Provoked to a livid complexion by these words, Lin Jiayuan was about to retort when a voice came from behind him.
"Dad, what are you guys talking about?"
"You know each other?" Looking from his father to Lin Qianfan, a look of confusion crossed his face.
"It's nothing," Lin Jiayuan said coldly. "We don't know each other."
Hearing this, Lin Qianfan couldn't help letting out a laugh, turned around, and left without saying another word.
The recommendation letter in his hand was slightly crumpled from his grip, but his steps were light and unburdened.
With the recommendation letter secured, Lin Qianfan wasted no time in initiating his next plan.
He headed to several nearby universities, visited the presidents and student unions, and submitted applications to rent storefront spaces.
At the same time, he contacted several hotels, restaurants, and shops to negotiate delivery service partnerships.
"Mr. Lin, what is your platform's service fee?" the owner of a restaurant asked.
"Zero commission for the first three months," Lin Qianfan answered decisively. "After that, it will be determined based on order volume, and high volumes come with rebate discounts."
The owner hesitated for a moment. "That condition... sounds pretty good."
"Trust me, once you join the platform, the order volume will definitely satisfy you," Lin Qianfan said in a firm tone.
After a whole day of running around, Lin Qianfan successfully signed several partner merchants.
When he returned to the dormitory, the sky had completely darkened.
He opened the calendar app on his phone and checked it; National Day was only a few days away.
Leaning back in his chair, he pondered the recent events in his mind.
"I should go back during the National Day holiday to pick up my grandparents and bring them over, so they aren't always worrying," this thought kept swirling in his head.
Opening his laptop, he listed out his recent expenses, rental budget, and upcoming plans.
Although the income from the milk tea shop and the delivery platform couldn't be called exorbitant profits just yet, fortunately, they were stable.
If he wanted to bring his grandparents over, the money for short-term housing rental was more than enough.
He clicked on nearby housing rental listings and filtered for a few apartment complexes closer to the school.
"The place needs to be clean and tidy, the floor shouldn't be too high, and the distance to the hospital and supermarket must be moderate," he recited the requirements in his mind, comparing and filtering them one by one.
"This one looks good: a two-bedroom apartment with a living room, fully furnished with appliances, and close to the bus stop."
Lin Qianfan locked onto a listing and dialed the landlord's phone number.
"Hello, I'm interested in the property you posted. Would it be convenient to view the apartment in the next few days?"
"Sure, I'm free tomorrow afternoon," came the middle-aged man's brisk voice from the other end of the line.
"Great, then I'll be there at three o'clock tomorrow afternoon."
After hanging up, he felt a sense of reassurance.
His grandparents were getting older, and living conditions in the countryside were limited. Although their health was generally decent, he couldn't bear to let them keep suffering in the village.
Now that he had some savings, bringing them over to enjoy a few days of peace and comfort was something he had planned for a long time.
The next afternoon, he arrived at the agreed location on time. The landlord was a man in his early forties who led him inside to take a detailed look around.
"The apartment was newly renovated last year, the furniture is all brand new, and the appliances haven't really been used," the landlord introduced honestly.
"The location is great, close to the school, convenient for grocery shopping, and the price isn't high."
Lin Qianfan looked around and nodded in satisfaction: "Alright, I'll take this one."
"What about the rent terms?" Lin Qianfan asked.
"One thousand per month, one month's deposit with three months' advance payment."
"Could the deposit be a bit less?" Lin Qianfan asked tentatively.
The landlord thought for a moment. "Fine, a deposit for one month with one month's advance, considering you're a student."
Lin Qianfan nodded, signed the contract, and paid on the spot.
After the landlord left, he stood in the room and looked around, thinking about what else might be needed.
"I need to buy some new bedding, and pots, pans, and utensils need to be added too." He opened his phone to jot down a checklist.
A few days later, National Day finally arrived. Lin Qianfan bought his train ticket and set off for the village early in the morning just as the sky was turning light.
As soon as he reached the entrance of the village, he saw his grandfather sitting in front of the door smoking a dry tobacco pipe, while his grandmother was busy sorting vegetables inside the house.
"Grandpa, Grandma, I'm back!" Lin Qianfan walked into the small courtyard carrying large and small bags.
"Qianfan is back!" Grandma put down the vegetables in her hands and hurried out to welcome him.
Grandpa raised his head to look at him, still biting on his tobacco pipe. "Good that you're back. What are you fussing about, bringing so much stuff?"
"I bought some food and supplements for you two," Lin Qianfan said with a smile as he put down the bags.
"Why waste that hard-earned money? We have everything we need at home." Although Grandpa was complaining, he couldn't hide the joy on his face.
Grandma opened a bag, looked at the food inside, and took a bite. "Oh my, this tastes really good. Qianfan, you must have spent a lot of money, right?"
"Not much at all. As long as you and Grandpa enjoy it, Grandma."
After lunch, Lin Qianfan sat in the courtyard and chatted with his grandparents about bringing them over to live with him.
"Grandpa, Grandma, this time I came back specifically to take you to the city to live for a while."
He said it casually, his tone very natural.
Grandma was slightly stunned. "Go to the city? Where would we live?"
"I rented a place near the school. It's a nice place, specifically for you both to live in."
Grandpa, however, frowned. "No need to go through all that trouble. We live just fine right here at home, what are we running off to the city for? We don't know anyone there, and it costs money."
"Grandpa, the conditions in the city are better. You can live more comfortably over there. Besides, renting a place doesn't cost that much, I can afford it."
Grandpa waved his hand. "We're country folks, we don't care about all that fancy stuff."
Grandma patted Grandpa's hand. "Stop talking nonsense. Our grandson is showing his filial piety, how can we just reject it?"
"Besides, living in the city for a while is good too—we can see a doctor and change the environment."
Grandpa wanted to say something more, but under a glare from Grandma, he swallowed his words back down.
Lin Qianfan looked at the two elderly people. "Grandpa, Grandma, you can just pack up simply for now. Just bring a few sets of clothes and shoes. If anything is missing, I'll buy it for you later."
Pausing for a moment, he added, "This rented place is only temporary anyway."
"I've already bought a house, and it's being renovated right now, airing out the formaldehyde. Once the renovation is finished, we'll move right in."
Hearing this, Grandma's eyes instantly turned red, and she pulled Lin Qianfan's hand. "You really bought a house?"
Lin Qianfan nodded. "I bought it. Don't worry, from now on we all have our own permanent home."
Grandma couldn't hold it back any longer and began wiping away her tears. "Good, good. Qianfan, you really are something to be proud of."
