Volume One, Chapter Six: Brother Chuan, Don’t You Want to Take Revenge on That Vile Woman?
The moment Jiang Weili saw Song Chuanhe, her heart instantly raced, as if a restless young deer had suddenly burst into the calm chambers of her heart.
Her hand, clutching the lunchbox, trembled slightly with nervousness.
Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she gracefully approached Song Chuanhe, biting her lip and speaking softly, “Brother Chuanhe, good morning. I specially made this breakfast for you. I wonder if you will like it.”
“Whoa, Brother Chuan, you’re quite the lucky one. You’ve only been at the steel mill a few days, and already such a beautiful and virtuous woman is bringing you breakfast. I really envy you, man, envy you.”
Before Song Chuanhe could speak, a man of about the same age standing beside him chimed in playfully, teasing him.
Jiang Weili recognized him immediately.
He was Qin Mu, a comrade who had fought alongside Song Chuanhe in a distant place. After Song Chuanhe was discharged from the army, Qin Mu also chose to leave the service and had followed Song Chuanhe to work at the steel mill. Later, when Song Chuanhe acquired the mill, Qin Mu became his trusted assistant.
Though Qin Mu appeared carefree and unrestrained—more rough and casual than the steady and mature Song Chuanhe—he was deeply loyal and a good comrade.
In her previous life’s hardships, after Song Chuanhe extended a helping hand, Qin Mu also lent her considerable support.
Thinking of this, Jiang Weili felt a twinge of regret.
If only she had known that today she would run into Song Chuanhe’s good brother Qin Mu.
She should have made extra breakfast this morning to bring along.
Song Chuanhe shot a glare at Qin Mu for his meddling, then said indifferently to Jiang Weili, “Sorry, Comrade Jiang Weili, I already ate breakfast this morning...”
“Brother Chuan, you’re not... oh right, you’ve already eaten breakfast this morning. He’s finished, but I haven’t eaten yet. I wonder if Comrade Jiang Weili would mind giving me this breakfast instead?” Qin Mu quickly interjected.
Jiang Weili hadn’t expected Song Chuanhe to have already eaten so early.
She felt a little disappointed that her lovingly prepared breakfast wouldn’t be given to him.
But then she thought, if she gave it to Brother Chuanhe’s good friend Qin Mu, perhaps it would earn her some goodwill. He might say a few good words for her in front of Chuanhe.
With that thought, Jiang Weili immediately brightened, smiling warmly as she said, “Of course, Comrade. I made this breakfast with local specialties; I hope it suits your taste.”
“I’m a rough guy—anything that fills my stomach, I’ll eat,” Qin Mu said without pretense, taking the breakfast from her hands.
Song Chuanhe pursed his lips without expression and was about to rise and head to the factory director’s office.
Jiang Weili, quick to notice this, hurriedly said, “Brother Chuanhe, after work today, if you’re free, I’d like to invite you to my home for a meal.”
Song Chuanhe paused mid-step.
He turned to look at Jiang Weili, casting her a cold glance. His thin lips parted coolly: “Is there something you need?”
His tone was polite but distant—a protective mask he had learned to wear over the years.
Song Chuanhe had always been like this to some extent, but never so coldly aloof.
Jiang Weili preferred the Song Chuanhe from years ago—vibrant with charisma and down-to-earth, without such a vast emotional distance.
Now, though he stood right before her, he seemed so far away, as if separated by an insurmountable gulf.
This thought made her feel a pang of inferiority, yet another idea struck her, filling her with confidence.
She was a person with memories of a past life, surely capable of turning fate around.
Biting her lip, she summoned her courage and said, “Brother Chuanhe, it’s nothing urgent. We just want to apologize on behalf of Sister Weiyue. After all, it was we who wronged you back then.”
Qin Mu, still holding the metal lunchbox and not yet moving away, pricked up his ears on hearing the familiar name “Weiyue.” His eyes widened in surprise.
Wasn’t that the name Song Chuanhe mentioned every time he got drunk or confided his innermost feelings in the dead of night?
More than that, the aloof Song Chuanhe would lie on his bed after training, staring intently at a photo of this woman named Weiyue.
At first, Qin Mu had asked Song Chuanhe who she was, but Chuanhe refused to say.
Only after their friendship deepened did Qin Mu learn that this Weiyue was Song Chuanhe’s unattainable white moonlight—the love engraved on his heart.
Whenever he thought of what Weiyue had done to Chuanhe, Qin Mu felt a bitter grievance he could not swallow.
Before Song Chuanhe even spoke, Qin Mu said to Jiang Weili, “What a coincidence! Brother Chuanhe will be free after work today. Just wondering, if you invite him over, would you mind if I came along?”
Jiang Weili was momentarily stunned, never having expected Qin Mu to say that.
But once she recovered, she quickly replied, “Of course not! I would be honored.”
Song Chuanhe entered the factory director’s office, with Qin Mu trailing closely behind. When Song Chuanhe sat down, he shot Qin Mu a sharp look.
That glance made Qin Mu break out in a cold sweat.
He hurriedly explained, “Brother Chuan, if I’m not mistaken, the ‘Weiyue’ that lady just mentioned is the same woman in your photo, right?”
Song Chuanhe remained silent, picking up the pen on the desk and flipping through the documents he needed to sign, as if not hearing Qin Mu’s words.
Yet the documents failed to hold his attention, betraying the turmoil beneath his calm exterior.
Qin Mu, unaware of the deeper emotions, thought Song Chuanhe simply didn’t want to hear what he had to say.
He curiously asked, “Brother Chuan, aren’t you the one who cares about that woman the most? Don’t you want to use this opportunity to make her see you in a new light, to show her just how formidable you’ve become?”
Qin Mu admired how steady Chuanhe was now. Back in the army, he’d almost daily and nightly held that woman’s photo, caressing it tenderly, gazing at it with deep affection.
He even kept that photo tucked inside his uniform pocket during missions.
Now that woman was here, yet Chuanhe remained composed, not even mentioning meeting her face-to-face, not confronting her to show how well he was doing, how wrong she was to leave him.
Sometimes, Qin Mu just couldn’t understand Chuanhe’s ways.
If it were him, and a woman treated him like that, he would definitely take revenge.
If not revenge, he’d at least make sure she knew how mistaken she was to walk away.
Song Chuanhe slowly raised his head and said in a leisurely tone, “Of course I want to. But more than that, I want her to kneel and beg for mercy, to be utterly desperate and abandoned by all.”
“Damn, Brother Chuan, only you could say something like that. But didn’t you love her fiercely? Your devotion to her in the army—I can’t believe you’d be so willing to do this to her.”
“Oh? Then go find out if the breakfast vendor at the factory gate is still here.”
“Wait, Brother Chuan, what does that woman have to do with the breakfast vendor? Why do you want me to find out about the vendor?”
