Chapter 55: She will never have children again!
"Jinchuan, your reflexes are too fast! You almost burned Su Nian just now," Cheng Mu noted the details and said with a sigh of relief.
Everyone looked toward Su Nian.
Su Nian had indeed been quite close to the grill just moments before.
Seeing everyone looking at her with concern, Su Nian smiled gracefully, "It's nothing, I'm fine."
The culprit, Lu Siwei, hurriedly stepped forward to check on her, cupping Su Nian's hand and blowing on it gently with a distressed expression, "Sister-in-law, I didn't mean to, you scared me to death!"
Su Nian stroked her hair, "It's alright."
Wen Ying's fingers curled inward slightly.
She suddenly realized she had been overthinking.
Lu Jinchuan's rapid action just now had not been out of fear that she might get burned, but rather his sheer panic that Su Nian might be caught in the crossfire, to the point where he disregarded his own safety.
Only Su Nian could cause him to lose his usual cold composure.
Huo Jinran checked to make sure Wen Ying was uninjured before settling back into his seat.
Huo Fuyi asked worriedly, "Sister, are you really okay? Let me take a look."
Wen Ying shook her head.
He Xicheng's expression shifted subtly. He glanced at Lu Jinchuan across from him, who was still shielding Su Nian, "President Lu, didn't you see that Wen Ying almost got burned just now?"
Wen Ying was the one closest to the grill.
Su Nian was never in any real danger!
Only then did Lu Jinchuan slowly sweep his gaze over.
Without a ripple in his voice, he asked, "Did she? I didn't notice."
Wen Ying's heart tightened abruptly, her breathing turning somewhat chaotic.
So he simply had no bandwidth to pay attention to her.
Even his tone was so indifferent, completely uncaring whether she was injured or not.
The only person who could ever command his care and concern was Su Nian.
Even He Xicheng felt a suffocating heaviness in his chest at that response.
It made him understand all the more what kind of life Wen Ying had endured over the past three years!
A man like Lu Jinchuan was utterly apathetic toward her!
There were two groups of people at the camping site, totaling more than twenty individuals.
Suddenly feeling deeply exhausted, Wen Ying wrapped a cashmere shawl around her shoulders, walked over to her tent, and sat down. The scenery here was breathtaking, the air unpolluted, and even the starry sky was exceptionally magnificent and grand.
Wen Ying quietly enjoyed her moment of solitude.
As for whatever Lu Jinchuan and the others were still chatting about, she no longer had any interest in paying attention.
During this time, Huo Fuyi ran over several times.
She brought Wen Ying a hand warmer and a thermos filled with hot water.
Though young, the girl was very thoughtful: "Sister, if you need anything, just call me. My tent is right next to yours, please don't hesitate to ask."
Wen Ying's mood improved slightly, a rare occurrence: "Okay."
After Huo Fuyi left, Huo Jinran came over.
Seeing him, Wen Ying hadn't intended to speak, but feeling it might be impolite, she asked, "Didn't you go play with the others?"
Huo Jinran himself didn't know why he had wandered over to this side. He hesitated for a moment before saying, "It's going to get colder tonight, make sure to keep warm."
Wen Ying: "......Thank you."
She felt that Huo Jinran had been acting a bit strange lately, though she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
In the past, he had never bothered to converse with her.
Contempt and disdain had been his default attitude.
Sensing that Wen Ying had nothing to say to him, Huo Jinran hesitated before suddenly asking, "I saw on your WeChat moments that you went to the hospital because you were sick before. Are you better now?"
Wen Ying was stunned.
More than twenty days had passed since her hospital visit.
Back then, she had desperately hoped Lu Jinchuan would accompany her, but he broke his promise. Even the post she shared on her moments was something he had never cared about.
Or perhaps, he hadn't even looked at it at all.
The first person to inquire about her illness wasn't Lu Jinchuan, but rather his friend.
"I'm fine, thanks for asking," Wen Ying replied calmly.
The pad of her thumb unconsciously rubbed against her flat lower abdomen.
A bitter ache lingered in her heart.
The specialists all said her condition was complicated now, the success rate of treatment wasn't high, and she would even lose her fertility...
Come to think of it, how could she not care?
Even if she recovered.
She would never have children of her own.
Wen Ying said nothing more.
She was very quiet, remaining still most of the time, maintaining only a polite and distant detachment toward him.
Huo Jinran pressed his lips together, "That's good."
Wen Ying glanced sideways, "Is there anything else, Mr. Huo?"
Realizing her intention, Huo Jinran replied, "No. Then I won't disturb you any longer."
Wen Ying sat for a while longer.
She actually quite enjoyed this solitude. As the night deepened, she prepared to stand up and head into her tent.
Just as she rose to her feet, footsteps sounded in the distance, accompanied by the faint, bobbing beam of a handheld lantern.
A woman's voice rang out with a smile, "Is this your tent?"
Wen Ying looked toward the source of the sound.
Su Nian and the tall, imposing figure of Lu Jinchuan were standing together. Lu Jinchuan ducked his head to enter the tent first, and Su Nian followed closely behind, the two of them stepping inside together.
They were actually sharing a tent...
Wen Ying's gaze trembled slightly.
It was genuinely quite unexpected.
Even though Lu Jinchuan knew she was here today as well, he hadn't bothered to avoid her.
Wen Ying tightened her grip around the thermos, cradling it as she returned to her tent.
Since this was an upscale resort, all the facilities were top-tier. Even the camping tents were designed like hotel suites with a bedroom and a living room, complete with a soft mattress, a sofa, and a coffee table.
Wen Ying felt virtually none of the night's chill and slept soundly until dawn.
For her, this experience was not bad at all.
Emerging from the tent, Wen Ying took the shuttle bus first to freshen up.
Upon entering, she ran into Lu Siwei, who had already finished tidying herself up. Seeing Wen Ying, she immediately curled her lips into a scoff.
Wen Ying walked past her without a sideways glance to wash her face.
Once again ignoring Lu Siwei.
This time, Lu Siwei stopped in her tracks and stared at Wen Ying for a long while.
Wen Ying showed no intention of speaking to her.
Annoyed, Lu Siwei blurted out, "Are you looking for my brother?"
Wen Ying paused and finally turned her head.
Seeing that Wen Ying had finally reacted, a trace of smug triumph bloomed in Lu Siwei's heart. She had known all along that her brother was Wen Ying's absolute weak spot!
Hit that point, and it never failed!
"Stop looking. My brother and my sister-in-law went back to stay at the hotel past midnight last night. Save your breath."
Believing she had won this round, Lu Siwei turned and walked away.
Wen Ying stood in place, her expression dazed for a brief moment.
A sudden realization dawned on her.
So they hadn't stayed here overnight after all.
Did they feel the tents had poor sound insulation and lacked privacy, making it inconvenient for them to be... intimate?
That was the only possibility Wen Ying could think of.
After pondering for a good while, she returned to the hotel. She needed to do her makeup and tidy herself up to ensure her appearance seemed no different from anyone else's—a routine she was forced to maintain during this period.
The company team-building event was scheduled to last here until the afternoon.
When Wen Ying came downstairs, she learned that Lu Jinchuan had already left with Su Nian.
Presumably, her presence here had ruined his mood.
Wen Ying didn't care. She ate breakfast and then continued organizing data in the coffeehouse.
Shen Jiaxiao only learned about the series of dramatic events from the previous night today, and she beat her chest in deep regret for not going on the camping trip to back Wen Ying up.
In truth, Wen Ying had long since grown calm about such matters.
Given her physical condition, if she failed to let go of those emotional hurdles, the only result would be a worsening of her illness and an even shorter lifespan.
Monday.
Work proceeded at its usual intense pace.
Feixi had several regular corporate partners, including ongoing technical maintenance for which Feixi was also responsible.
He Xicheng brought Wen Ying to meet with a partner to handle subsequent technical matters.
Passing by the most prominent Lansheng Building in the CBD district, Wen Ying didn't even spare it an extra glance.
Their partner's office building was located right near Lansheng.
During their meeting with President Lin of the client company, Wen Ying caught sight of Zhao柯 negotiating with another group of people, likely dispatched by Lu Jinchuan for some business venture.
Zhao Ke spotted Wen Ying as well, instinctively frowning as his mouth opened, "Manag..."
Wen Ying paid him no heed and simply brushed past him.
