Chapter 45: Infidelity Toward Su Nian
Lu Jinchuan finished speaking, untied his tie, and prepared to take a shower.
He didn't spare Wen Ying a single glance as he walked past her.
As if looking at Wen Ying even for a second would be an act of infidelity toward Su Nian.
Had he so much as looked at Wen Ying, he would have noticed the pale, sickly look on her face.
Wen Ying slowly snapped out of her daze, quickly understanding what Lu Jinchuan meant.
Her cheeks flushed hot in an instant, and beneath her bashfulness lay a well of unutterable embarrassment and shock!
Did Lu Jinchuan think she wanted to sleep with him?!
"You've overthought it," Wen Ying took a deep breath. "I'll sleep in the guest room tonight!"
Only then did Lu Jinchuan look back, his handsome, refined face expressionless.
Wen Ying had already left.
Quite decisively.
Now that she thought about it, getting rejected would naturally make her feel awkward, too.
He gave an imperceptible, scoffing smile and walked into the bathroom.
Looking at the clean bathtub, Wen Ying did not fill it with hot water.
He stared at the tub for a long time, then turned around and used the showerhead instead.
Wen Ying hadn't slept well at all the previous night; Lu Jinchuan's sudden return had completely disrupted her plans.
After getting up and washing up, she headed out and happened to see Lu Jinchuan also opening his door and coming out.
He was on the phone, his cold tone softening. "Mm, I'm free. Just make the arrangements."
Wen Ying looked away and walked downstairs.
With a tone that gentle, she didn't need to guess to know it was Su Nian.
The degree to which they were inseparable was somewhat beyond her expectations.
After heading downstairs.
Wen Ying was surprised to find the old matriarch actually there. Seeing her, the elderly woman smiled and beckoned, "My dear, you're up so early?"
The old matriarch then looked at Lu Jinchuan, who was following closely behind Wen Ying down the stairs.
Her face showed a look of gratification.
Wen Ying was surprised. "Grandma, why did you come over so early?"
The old matriarch had people take out all the insulated food containers. "I heard you changed jobs? Jinchuan said you've been quite busy and haven't had time to go back to the old residence with him, and the house hasn't been cooking meals either, so Grandma had some people make your favorite dishes."
Wen Ying glanced at Lu Jinchuan.
Is that what he told Grandma?
That she was too busy with work to stay home, rather than that she wanted a divorce?
Wen Ying was somewhat puzzled. Just when on earth was Lu Jinchuan planning to come clean to Grandma and the others?
"Sit down quickly. Jinchuan, sit next to Ying-ying," the old matriarch arranged with boundless energy. When Lu Jinchuan didn't move, she even glared at him. "What? Unwilling?"
Lu Jinchuan sat down smoothly. "Whatever makes you happy."
Wen Ying said nothing.
The old matriarch did all the talking throughout the meal, directing Lu Jinchuan, " Peel some shrimp for Ying-ying; she likes these poached prawns."
Knowing Lu Jinchuan disliked such chores, Wen Ying said, "There's no need..."
Lu Jinchuan had already picked up a shrimp, his aristocratic face emotionless, and meticulously peeled the shell before placing it on her plate.
Yet Wen Ying felt a bit dazed and shocked.
Because in the past, she was always the one doing these things. Lu Jinchuan had never lifted a finger to help around the house, let alone peeled a shrimp for her.
To be so skilled now...
He must have done it so many times for Su Nian that practice had made him perfect.
So, Lu Jinchuan was capable of taking care of someone after all.
Yet she, his wife, had to bask in the reflected light of another person just to experience it once.
Looking at the two of them acting like strangers despite sharing a roof, the old matriarch felt helpless and anxious. Naturally, she knew Wen Ying was a good child and the granddaughter of her late husband's comrade-in-arms. Seeing how indifferent Lu Jinchuan was toward Wen Ying filled her with a painful sense of guilt.
"Isn't New Year's approaching in a few days? Jinchuan, why don't you and Ying-ying go on a vacation and spend some quality time together?" The old matriarch gave Lu Jinchuan a meaningful look.
Wen Ying looked at Lu Jinchuan, hoping he would confess the truth sooner rather than later.
Lu Jinchuan wiped his hands deliberately and calmly. "I'm busy. I don't have time."
"You!" The old matriarch slammed the table in anger. "If you don't have time, make time! Rules are dead, but people are alive! Can work be more important than your wife?"
Instead, Lu Jinchuan cast a sideways glance, his tone neither cold nor warm. "Do you want to go?"
He was asking Wen Ying.
To be precise.
He was warning Wen Ying not to be tactless.
Wen Ying tightened her grip on her chopsticks and said to the old matriarch, "Grandma, I'm busy too, so there's no need."
Lu Jinchuan had no intention of accompanying her whatsoever.
Moreover, when they came downstairs earlier, he had been on the phone with Su Nian, seemingly arranging a date.
Lu Jinchuan was going to keep Su Nian company.
As for her, it had been "busy," "no time," and "no patience" from start to finish.
Any request from Su Nian, he would fulfill...
The old matriarch opened her mouth, but ultimately sighed and stopped pushing.
Since Wen Ying's car wasn't drivable, the old matriarch told Lu Jinchuan to give her a ride.
This time, Lu Jinchuan didn't refuse.
Wen Ying didn't put on airs either; she went to the car to retrieve the book she needed to find yesterday and quietly got into Lu Jinchuan's car.
"I'll have a repair service handle the car, and I'll come pick it up then."
Lu Jinchuan glanced at her sideways and replied indifferently, "As you like."
A vast distance separated the two of them inside the car. The moment he got in, Lu Jinchuan began looking at his iPad, treating her presence as if she were merely air.
Yet Wen Ying was somewhat distracted.
After hesitating over and over, she decided she still had to ask him when exactly he planned to make their divorce public to Grandma and her maternal grandmother.
"Mr. Lu, can we talk?"
