Chapter 36: They Headed Out for a Prenatal Checkup
Marrying Lu Jinchuan was the result of many circumstances that had left her with no other choice, step by step.
She could not refute He Xicheng's words.
He Xicheng stood up. "I'm going to get you some water. Stay here!"
Wen Ying looked at her IV drip, which was nearly empty, thinking she should call a nurse to remove the needle.
The emergency department was currently in a state of chaotic busyness. She stepped off the bed and walked a few paces, but seeing no available nurses, she leaned against a wall to rest.
Nearby, some people were chatting.
"Guess who I just saw? Mr. Lu from the Lu Group! He just rushed into the hospital!"
Wen Ying thought she had misheard.
Lu Jinchuan had come to the hospital?
Could he be here to see her?
Wen Ying felt the possibility was extremely low; he never wasted any thought on her.
Soon, the two women spoke again, "Mr. Lu brought a stunningly beautiful woman with him. You should have seen how anxious he was about her."
As expected.
Wen Ying had no expectations, and therefore, could not be disappointed. They were destined to be strangers to one another anyway.
"Let me tell you quietly, I think they’re heading for a prenatal checkup..." the woman added, lowering her voice to gossip.
Even knowing he was there for Su Nian, hearing the words "prenatal checkup" made Wen Ying involuntarily stroke the area of her womb, which was on the verge of losing its reproductive function.
Her legs felt like they were filled with lead.
The dense, aching pain in her chest reminded her that not everything could be dismissed simply by deciding to let it go.
"Why are you wandering around when you're sick?"
A man's languid voice came from behind her.
Wen Ying turned around, surprised to see Zhou Yu.
Zhou Yu stood with one hand in his pocket, watching her, though she did not know how long he had been listening to the gossip of the two women nearby.
Wen Ying moistened her parched throat. "Why are you here?"
Zhou Yu replied, "Someone called my number, saying you had fainted and that they needed your ID and health insurance card."
Only then did Wen Ying remember. She had used the same phone number for years, and many years ago, Zhou Yu had taken her phone and set himself as her emergency contact.
He had promised that whenever she was in need, he would be the first to arrive.
But now...
"I'm sorry," Wen Ying said coolly. "My friend didn't know."
Zhou Yu stared at her for a long moment before stepping forward to take her wrist. With practiced movements, he removed the needle and pressed down on the puncture site. "Is a cold and fever enough to make you faint? Yingying, you're just like you were when you were a child, playing these little tricks to get me to come to you."
Back then, he had many admirers, and whenever she grew jealous and unhappy, she would always pretend to have a "headache, fever, or injury" to make him rush to her side.
Wen Ying lowered her eyes to look at the hand holding her. She quietly withdrew her wrist, consciously putting distance between them. "You didn't have to come."
Zhou Yu looked at her, assuming she was still throwing a tantrum.
"Next time something happens, contact me on WeChat first; don't call directly," he said, rising to lean against the wall. "Otherwise, Jiang Qian will get jealous."
"Understood. It won't happen again."
Wen Ying did not argue. Pointless explanations were inferior to meaningful actions.
Zhou Yu watched Wen Ying. Her reaction was far too calm. In the past, she would never have tolerated him favoring another woman.
He was unsure whether Wen Ying was playing a game of feigned retreat or if she had other plans.
Thinking it over, he reasoned that when a woman has a little temper, she eventually needs to be coaxed with a bit of sweetness.
Zhou Yu stepped forward, reached out to ruffle Wen Ying’s hair, and leaned down to look at her. "Are you over it now?"
Wen Ying met his devil-may-care gaze and reached up to brush his hand away.
Inadvertently, she glanced up and saw Lu Jinchuan and Su Nian standing not far away.
Lu Jinchuan was watching her and Zhou Yu's interaction with a detached expression, like a... complete stranger and bystander.
