There was finally a sound from inside. “Come in.”

Wen Ying pushed open the door. Lu Jinchuan had just finished showering and changing, and was standing with his back to her, looking at his phone.

As she entered, she noticed his suit jacket lying on the carpet beside the tatami. Without thinking, she walked over and picked it up.

Lu Jinchuan happened to turn around. His gaze fell on the jacket in her hands, and his brows drew together slightly. “Don’t touch my clothes again.”

Wen Ying had once been the one to iron all his clothes herself.

Naturally, Lu Jinchuan assumed she was about to take the jacket away for cleaning.

Wen Ying pressed her lips together and tossed it onto the tatami. “When are we going to—”

“You should sleep first.” Lu Jinchuan cut her off. Glancing at his watch, he strode out of the room without caring whether she had something important to say.

Wen Ying had not expected him to leave in such a hurry.

She had been given no chance at all to discuss the divorce with him.

As for what could make him so anxious, apart from Su Nian, she could think of no one else.

A car horn sounded downstairs.

Her phone chimed. He Xicheng had sent her a voice message.

“Come with me to a dinner party the night after tomorrow. Everyone attending is influential in the industry. Building more connections will do you good.”

Wen Ying replied, “Okay.”

Then she took a change of clothes from the wardrobe—clothes she had left there—and returned to the guest room to sleep.

The next day.

The old lady was furious when she learned that Lu Jinchuan had left in the middle of the night. Wen Ying managed to calm her down before finally making her way to Fexi.

She had already gained a fairly comprehensive understanding of Fexi’s situation. After reviewing all the documents that needed her attention, she even organized a detailed set of strategic guidelines and handed them over to Chen Chen, one of the core members of the technical department.

When Chen Chen learned that Wen Ying had finished reading a small mountain of documents and data in less than three days—and had even prepared a technical guidance document of immense value for him—he was so stunned that he could barely close his mouth.

“She did all this by herself?” Chen Chen asked, unwilling to believe it.

He Xicheng smiled meaningfully. “This is only the beginning. Do you know how sought-after she was back then? The world’s top universities were practically throwing offers at her. Even if I worked hard for another five years, I might still not be able to match what she achieved several years ago.”

Chen Chen was shocked and doubtful, yet still could not bring himself to fully believe it. “President He, are you kidding? You’re already among the best in the country. What is she, some kind of immortal?”

He Xicheng merely smiled and said nothing.

If Wen Ying had not been a once-in-a-century talent, even his father would not have been so furious when she withdrew from the public eye to get married that he had to take blood-pressure medication.

What a waste.

There were always idiots who mistook pearls for fish eyes.

The dinner required formal attire, but Wen Ying owned no haute couture gown. For three years, she had revolved entirely around Lu Jinchuan. On top of that, their marriage had been kept secret, so she had never had any occasion to dress up. The only gown she possessed was a birthday gift from Grandma the previous year.

It was a dark-green satin mermaid gown.

When Grandma had given her the dress, she had also given Lu Jinchuan a suit, complete with cuff links set with dark-green gemstones that matched Wen Ying’s gown—a couple’s set.

Wen Ying had never had a chance to wear hers, while Lu Jinchuan had never worn his suit.

Her complexion looked pale without makeup. She applied extra blush to conceal her weariness, then went to the dinner in the gown.

When He Xicheng saw Wen Ying, even he could not help showing a hint of amazement and appreciation. “Dressed like a proper person for once. I almost didn’t recognize you.”

Wen Ying said, “Brother Cheng, you look pretty handsome too.”

“Anyone with eyes can see that.” He Xicheng bent his arm. “Make a good impression tonight. Everyone here is a major figure in the industry. Once you establish these connections, you’ll have laid a solid foundation.”

Wen Ying placed her hand on his arm and drew a deep breath. “I understand.”

The dinner was a highly formal affair, and she knew how important it was.

Even though she had developed U.N2, she now represented Fexi.

He Xicheng was at the height of his influence in this circle. Moreover, his father was Academician He Jiang of the Academy of Aerospace Research. No one would dare refuse him courtesy.

Amid the social pleasantries, He Xicheng focused on introducing Wen Ying. “This is Wen Ying, the technical genius Fexi recently recruited.”

Everyone looked at Wen Ying with smiles, but scrutiny lurked beneath them.

The guest list for tonight’s dinner was limited, and everyone who had been invited was among the country’s best. In their eyes, it was somewhat beneath He Xicheng to bring along such a young woman.

Was he really willing to spend such a valuable resource on a woman?

Besides, none of them had ever heard of anyone by that name. How remarkable could she really be? Could He Xicheng simply be inflating the status of his female companion?
