Chapter 31: The Red Fox Is Definitely Up to No Good

After Rain Xueqing sent Mo Yiqing the short video of the fox eating yogurt, she shared it in the dormitory group as well.
There were four people in the dormitory. Both Mo Yiqing and Lingren had an exceptionally keen interest in foxes.
The fourth person, Tang You, had never expressed any opinion about the matter. In fact, she had remained silent for a very long time.
However, the other three, Rain Xueqing included, were already used to it.
People who lived in cities yearned for pastoral idylls, while those who lived amid fields and livestock yearned for neon lights.
Tang You was the sort of person whose family owned cattle and horses. Once she came to the city, she became hopelessly addicted to computers. Even during her school days, she was practically a cyber-Genghis Khan rampaging through virtual battlefields.
Hard liquor in her left hand, mouse in her right. Her left eye galloped across the battlefield on the game screen, while her right eye monitored the secondary display.
Rain Xueqing’s college was located in the Xiaobei region. It was not one of the elite national universities commonly ranked as 985 or 211, but it was one of Xia Country’s premier institutions specializing in plant and animal sciences.
Every agricultural discipline imaginable was represented there, from ecological environments at the highest level to the removal of pets’ testicles at the lowest.
A considerable proportion of the students applying to Xia Country’s New Agricultural Academy came from families engaged in related industries, or intended to pursue careers involving plants or animals.
The academy was so intensely specialized that it had virtually none of the other popular majors. It even possessed, in a subtle and peculiar way, a certain exclusivity.
It was almost as though the academy had never been established for the purpose of recruiting and educating students or competing in international university rankings.
There was nothing wrong with saying that the academy’s admissions naturally contained an element of selection.
There were three other specialized institutions of a similar but distinct nature in Xia Country. All four had emerged from an experimental reform introduced five years earlier alongside the Green Health Education initiative.
……
An Sheng lay in Rain Xueqing’s arms and secretly glanced at the messages in the group chat. Her little mouth twisted to one side, and she immediately lost interest in spying on the conversation before scampering back to the table to eat.
Women were all such ungrateful wretches.
Just moments ago, they had still been praising her beauty and elegant figure. Then, in the very next breath, they had begun discussing the differences in appearance between foreign snow foxes and domestic red foxes, as well as which one was softer to the touch.
An Sheng was left speechless.
Wasn’t she… a red fox?
If she, Miss An, abandoned her bad-girl black stockings, bleached the blond fur on her head, and became respectable, would none of them recognize her?
“Yip, yip, yip…”
An Sheng gnawed enthusiastically on a strip of dried beef while Rain Xueqing returned to the livestream in the living room.
After the recent stream ban debacle, there were no longer even two or three viewers left in Rain Xueqing’s livestream.
“Ah… the stream is almost over, and I haven’t even sold a single sample pack of tea.”
Rain Xueqing opened the backend and took a look. Not one packet of her family’s tea had sold—not even the trial pack priced at thirty yuan with free shipping.

The trial gift box contained Zhenghe Congou, Tanyang Congou, Dongding Oolong, and a variety of jasmine tea.
Two black teas, one oolong, and one floral tea better suited to stronger tastes.
Both Zhenghe Congou and Tanyang Congou had histories stretching back more than a hundred years.
They had history, heritage, and even the British royal family and aristocracy could be brought out to endorse them.
Unfortunately, there were barely two people in the livestream. Rain Xueqing had no idea whom she was supposed to tell the stories to.
Of course, the Zhenghe Congou and Tanyang Congou sold by Rain Xueqing’s family did not come from the core production regions. In fact, they were merely black teas of the same varieties, grown in roughly similar locations.
The teas that were genuinely exported overseas and enthusiastically sought after by foreigners were priced by the ounce.
They enjoyed treatment comparable to tea from the core Longjing-producing regions.
Even if Rain Zhenghong managed to acquire some of that stock, there probably would not be many people in the livestream daring to buy it.
“Ah Qing, don’t be sad! It’s only your first day streaming. You haven’t sold a single packet of tea, but think about it this way: that old man streamed for five months without earning a single cent, and even ended up spending tens of thousands of his own money, not counting his medical expenses.”
“You’ve already done wonderfully. At least you haven’t lost money.” An Sheng avoided the livestream camera, curled up on Rain Xueqing’s thigh, and patted her lower belly as she comforted her. “It’s like the stock market. As long as you don’t invest anything, you’ve already outperformed ninety-seven percent of people.”
“Selling tea through livestreams is profitable as long as you don’t lose money. For now, just keep streaming and get familiar with it. Later, I’ll sell myself to raise money and boost your popularity. Carnivals will be flying everywhere!”
An Sheng comforted Rain Xueqing, gritting her teeth as she made the promise.
Wasn’t it simply a matter of lacking popularity? Of having no viewers?
When the time came, Miss An would risk ending up sleeping in a communal bunk at the zoo, borrow Lin Ying’s phone, and send gifts to push Rain Xueqing up the rankings!
Then she would think of some stunt to convert part of the traffic into actual followers.
Hmm…
When the time came, she would capture that obese king cobra from the mountain, wrap a headscarf around herself, put a suona between her teeth, and perform a breakdance with it.
“Yip-yip-yip-yip—”
“Master, it’s all right if you can’t catch anything. Your fox is clumsy and doesn’t know how to hunt. I can eat a little less, so that you can eat your fill and have more strength.”
“Yip, yip… Your fox will work hard from now on, too. When I grow up, I’ll catch a great wild boar for you, Master.”
After An Sheng’s words were mechanically translated into something both faithful and elegant in Rain Xueqing’s mind, they immediately became a display of coquettish cuteness.
“Waaah—Little An is so good!”
Upon hearing that, Rain Xueqing’s sadness, insecurity, and timidity all transformed into overwhelming emotion. Her eyes brimmed with tears as she lifted the little fox high into the air and showered her with kisses.
“Ah—Ah Qing! You’re repaying kindness with betrayal!”

An Sheng, her face covered in flecks of saliva, struggled in Rain Xueqing’s arms with an expression of utter horror.
Help! Her whole face was covered in spit! Her human caretaker was trying to eat a fox’s muzzle raw!
The fox had repaid kindness with kindness, only to suffer betrayal in return!
……
After a while, Rain Xueqing ended the livestream, stroked the little fox’s head, and prepared to take a shower.
An Sheng raised a paw in disgust and rubbed it back and forth across her little fox face.
Hmph! Women!
For now, it was kisses, cuddles, and being lifted high into the air. But once Miss An attained the Way, wouldn’t Rain Xueqing be pointing at her nose and shouting, with a look of utter disbelief, “Turn back!”
An Sheng vaguely remembered seeing a dubbed video on TikTok in her previous life.
The video had taken the King of Zhou and Daji from The Legend of Nezha as its protagonists.
Daji transformed from a fox into a human, and the scene then cut to the King of Zhou smashing things.
Daji said, “My king~”
The King of Zhou roared, “Turn back for me!”
Daji changed back, and the scene switched again to the King of Zhou running into a pleasure palace filled with wine ponds and forests of meat to indulge himself.
Life insurance advertisements nearly filled the entire screen.
“Heh…”
An Sheng stretched lazily, intending to wander outside for a while to digest her food before making another trip to Uphill Mountain on patrol.
As for High Peak Consulting…
“Yip-yip-yip—”
An Sheng reached the bathroom door, patted it, and spoke toward the hazy figure behind the frosted glass.
“Oh, all right. I’ll go outside and take a dump. Don’t play with Lucky too late, and remember to come back early…”
Rain Xueqing, who was showering inside the bathroom, understood the little fox’s fox-speech with remarkable ease and answered with a laugh.
The little fox was saying that she was going to take some snacks next door to play, and then go outside with Lucky to take a dump.
