Chapter Seven: Unspoken Feelings
The breath of spring quietly spread throughout the campus; the air grew fresh, and the sunlight softened. In the days of April, the classroom was filled with the atmosphere of an impending semester’s end. The pressure of final exams gripped everyone, plunging them into a tense rhythm of revision. Yet, beneath the stress, there lingered an indescribable anticipation—as if each soul awaited a farewell that belonged solely to youth.
Lin Ke’er gazed out at the verdant scene beyond the window, a ripple of unease stirring within her. She felt as though she stood at a crossroads, where many paths stretched ahead, yet she was uncertain which to choose. Over the past months, her relationship with Shen Haoran had shifted repeatedly. Every time their eyes met, a familiar warmth blossomed within her, but beneath that warmth lay uncertainty and hesitation.
Lately, Shen Haoran had grown more proactive than usual. During every break, he would sit beside her, sometimes helping her solve difficult problems, other times chatting about mundane daily matters. Occasionally, they would go to the cafeteria together, quietly sharing lunch. Though their words were few, the ease that hung between them made Lin Ke’er unconsciously relax. Yet, as time passed, she felt herself no longer the indifferent girl she once was. Deep within, an emotion long restrained had quietly sprouted, reaching toward the sunlight.
Still, Lin Ke’er could not summon the courage to confront the feelings within her heart. She feared that admitting her emotions would complicate everything—that she was unsure if Shen Haoran felt the same, and she was unwilling to let a pure friendship become tangled.
That day, the weather was clear—a perfect day to step out of the classroom. Lin Ke’er tidied her books on the desk, planning to take a stroll on the playground to breathe and ease her mind. As she rose and prepared to leave, she suddenly heard Shen Haoran’s voice.
“Ke’er, where are you going?” Shen Haoran turned toward her, his gaze warm and concerned.
Lin Ke’er was momentarily startled but replied, “Just going for a walk on the playground, for a while.” She tried to keep her tone casual, though her heart raced. She knew this moment’s choice might alter their relationship.
Shen Haoran seemed to give it little thought. Smiling, he stood. “I have some things to handle too. Why don’t we go together?”
Her heart skipped. She did not know whether there was a special meaning behind his invitation, but she could not refuse him. She nodded softly. “Alright, let’s go together.”
Side by side, they left the classroom. Sunlight bathed them, and the scent of spring filled the air. Around them, classmates busied themselves, while the playground held only a few students jogging, their footsteps crisp and clear. Their pace was unhurried, their steps sometimes overlapping, as if in this quiet campus, only their figures and whispers existed.
Reaching a corner of the playground, Lin Ke’er stopped and leaned against the railing, gazing at the distant green trees and blue sky. Shen Haoran stood beside her, and silence enveloped them—this quiet moment felt more precious than any words.
Suddenly, Shen Haoran spoke, his voice low and warm. “Ke’er, how have you been lately?”
Lin Ke’er turned to him, a complex emotion flickering in her eyes. “I’m fine, just like before.”
Shen Haoran looked at her, seemingly unsatisfied with her answer. “I know you don’t easily let yourself get hurt, but I want to know—have you been troubled by something recently?” His voice bore a gentle concern.
Lin Ke’er lowered her gaze, a faint smile touching her lips, tinged with bitterness. “Nothing much, just… it feels like something is about to end.”
Shen Haoran said nothing immediately, quietly studying her as if pondering deeply. After a few seconds, he finally spoke, “If you want to talk about it, I’m here to listen.”
His words washed over her like a warm tide, gently flooding the depths of her heart. She looked up at him, eyes clouded with a quiet confusion, a flood of unspoken feelings rising within. She longed to share the turmoil inside her but feared that once spoken, everything would grow complicated. She did not want to spoil their simple bond. Yet, the yearning in her heart relentlessly reminded her she could no longer evade.
She shook her head softly, smiling. “It’s nothing, just a sudden wave of reluctance. Graduation is near, and everyone is about to embark on their own futures.”
Shen Haoran remained silent for a moment, his gaze softening. “Yes, we’re each heading in different directions, but no matter what, I hope you take care of yourself.”
Her heart quickened again, and the air seemed heavier. She realized every word he spoke was imbued with deep feeling, and she gradually understood that his affection might no longer be mere friendship.
“Thank you,” she whispered, turning her gaze back to the playground, trying to conceal the flutter in her chest.
Standing beside her, Shen Haoran looked at her profile, a complex light flickering in his eyes. After a long pause, he spoke softly, “Ke’er, I’ve been thinking… maybe we’ve never been just friends.”
Her heart jolted, her smile freezing slightly. She turned to him, eyes wide with surprise and uncertainty. “What… do you mean?”
Shen Haoran took a deep breath, his gaze steady. “What I want to say is, I like you. I’ve liked you for a long time, but I never had the courage to tell you.”
At that moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. Lin Ke’er’s heart pounded loudly in her ears, her mind suddenly blank. She had never expected Shen Haoran to say those words now. It felt as though she had been struck, leaving her stunned. The emotions within surged like a tidal wave—fierce and uncontrollable.
She did not know how to respond, nor whether she was ready to face it all. She only lowered her head, biting her lip softly, her heart already a chaotic storm.
