Chapter Four: Silent Expectations Between Us
The biting winter wind still swept ruthlessly across the campus, yet the atmosphere within gradually grew warmer. With the successful conclusion of the cultural festival, everyone’s tension eased, as if this semester—filled with both anxiety and anticipation—had finally found its lighthearted ending. But within Lin Ke’er, no such relief settled; instead, a faint emptiness quietly took root.
Throughout these days, she had been pondering Shen Haoran’s departure. Though their connection had never been deep, he had unwittingly become a part of her life. She had never sought to disturb the silence between them, and Shen Haoran had always been there in just the right measure. Their interactions were like a gentle ray of afternoon sunlight—soft and warm without ever glaring—seemingly needing no words or promises to sense each other’s presence.
Whenever Shen Haoran approached her with a smile, Lin Ke’er would involuntarily lower her gaze to avoid meeting his eyes, knowing that in that moment, her own eyes would reveal a secret feeling—one she herself had yet to fully understand. She liked him. That affection was silent and subtle, like snowflakes drifting softly in winter, quietly accumulating into a silent snowfall that blanketed her entire heart.
That day, as usual, Lin Ke’er went to the library after school. She still hadn’t confided in anyone about her feelings for Shen Haoran, for she knew this emotion was both pure and complex, carrying more than she could bear.
Shen Haoran did not appear beside her as he often did; instead, he was busy with a few classmates preparing review materials for the upcoming final exams. Lin Ke’er sat quietly in a corner, holding an art book, her expression distant. Whenever she recalled Shen Haoran’s warm smile, a flutter stirred in her heart, yet she understood she had no right to ask for more.
“Ke’er, why are you here all alone again?” Li Xuan suddenly appeared before her, her smile radiant. Today, she seemed particularly cheerful, her eyes and brows curved with light, as if illuminated by sunshine.
“Nothing, I just wanted some quiet time alone,” Lin Ke’er replied softly, lifting her eyes slightly with a faint smile. She knew Li Xuan was one of the few friends with whom she could be completely herself; Li Xuan never questioned her silence and always understood the depths of her inner world.
“You’re not one for socializing anyway. If I’d known, I would’ve come with you for some milk tea,” Li Xuan said, patting her shoulder. “That guy Shen Haoran didn’t come looking for you today. What’s he been busy with lately?”
Lin Ke’er’s heart quickened at the mention of Shen Haoran. She didn’t answer directly but smiled gently instead. “He’s probably preparing for exams.”
Her words were brief, yet they could not conceal the unrest within her.
Li Xuan seemed to notice the change, a knowing smile flickering at the corner of her mouth. “You know, I think there’s something special between you and Haoran.” Her voice lowered, as if sensing a secret yet unspoken.
Lin Ke’er was momentarily stunned. Her eyes flickered before settling back into calm. She lowered her head, her gaze falling, emotions barely contained. “We’re just ordinary classmates,” she said, striving for a natural tone, though the subtle tension lingered beneath.
Li Xuan smiled, narrowing her eyes. “Is that so? But your chemistry isn’t something ordinary people can match.” She said no more, simply patting Lin Ke’er’s shoulder again. “Still, these things depend on how you feel.”
A tremor stirred within Lin Ke’er’s chest, Li Xuan’s words echoing softly, as if gently prying at the defenses around her heart. She hadn’t wished for these feelings to grow complicated, yet each word seemed to pluck at the taut string deep inside her. Unease settled in, and she found herself increasingly lost in thoughts of Shen Haoran, as if everything had grown tangled and mysterious beyond reason.
That afternoon, Lin Ke’er arrived at the library as usual. She had expected the day to pass quietly, a brief stay before heading home. But unexpectedly, Shen Haoran appeared before her. He wore his school jacket as always, a gentle smile on his lips, his eyes carrying a faint warmth.
“Are you free today? I have some questions I want to ask you,” Shen Haoran’s voice was clear and steady, carrying a soothing tenderness.
Lin Ke’er paused, her heartbeat nearly halting as she looked up at him. Calmly, she nodded. “Sure. What questions?”
He sat down and pulled out a math book, pointing to a problem. “I’ve been stuck on this one. Could you help me take a look?”
Her fingers lightly turned the pages, drawing closer to the problem he indicated. While her eyes fell on the complex math question, an unfamiliar feeling stirred within her. Their fingers brushed almost unintentionally, and in that instant, Lin Ke’er’s heart leapt. She dared not meet his gaze, feeling a sudden warmth flood her cheeks.
Shen Haoran seemed unaware of the subtle change, continuing his question in a gentle tone. “See, I just can’t figure this out. Could you explain your thought process?”
Taking a deep breath, Lin Ke’er steadied her racing heart and lowered her gaze, softly beginning to explain. Each time she reached a key point, her fingertips would brush against the back of his hand. The warmth of his skin quickened her pulse, yet she fought to remain composed. She knew these feelings could not be revealed easily; she must learn to control and conceal them.
Shen Haoran listened intently, nodding at times, furrowing his brow at others, his expression serious and focused. Watching him so absorbed, the fluttering and tenderness within her spread like sunlight warming a morning meadow—gentle and serene.
Gradually, the surrounding noise faded away, leaving only their conversation and that delicate atmosphere lingering in the air. At that moment, Lin Ke’er felt something softly touch her heart, loosening her resolve to hide her emotions. Instead, she began to wonder if she should dare to truly feel it all.
When Shen Haoran finally solved the problem, he looked up at her with gratitude and admiration in his eyes. “Thank you. You’re really smart.”
Lin Ke’er smiled quietly, her heart quietly stirred. She felt that perhaps she was no longer the girl who only watched silently from afar. Perhaps, in this fleeting youth, she could bravely embrace the warmth that belonged to her.
