Chapter 26: Drifting Apart
The morning light gently peeked through the gaps in the curtains, spilling into the classroom. The atmosphere was as quiet and tense as any other day. Lin Ke’er sat at her desk, eyes cast down at her book, yet she found herself unable to concentrate. Though she rubbed her temples with her fingertips in an effort to focus, the turmoil within refused to settle.
Lately, her emotions seemed to fluctuate uncontrollably. She bore the pressure of the upcoming college entrance exams as she always had, despite being long accustomed to its weight. Yet, memories of Shen Haoran kept intruding upon her mind like uninvited guests, quietly disrupting her peace.
Her gaze drifted involuntarily toward the window. From the basketball court, the familiar sound of balls hitting the pavement echoed. That sight alone made her heart flutter.
Shen Haoran was wearing a dark blue sports T-shirt, passing the ball among his teammates with effortless grace, his laughter ringing out clear and bright. Lin Ke’er knew that this version of Shen Haoran was undoubtedly the most captivating, and she seemed to have grown accustomed to him—no matter where he was, he always held a quiet, persistent sway over her heart.
She took a deep breath, trying to pull herself back to reality, and turned her gaze back to her book. But the image of Shen Haoran remained fixed in her mind, refusing to fade.
"Ke’er, are you alright?" Xiao Mei, sensing something amiss, asked in a low voice.
Lin Ke’er looked up, a forced smile playing on her lips. "I’m fine, just a bit tired."
Xiao Mei glanced at her, a flicker of doubt crossing her eyes, but she did not press further. Instead, she whispered a reminder, "Focus, don't keep drifting off."
Lin Ke’er nodded, though internally she wondered: would she ever truly escape the shadow of Shen Haoran?
The following Friday afternoon finally brought the class activity everyone had been anticipating. With the exams drawing near, the school had organized some leisure activities to help the students decompress. Lin Ke’er and Xiao Mei walked toward the event grounds; the sun was still brilliant, and the air was crisp.
"What are you planning to do today?" Xiao Mei asked.
"I think I’ll rest for a bit and find something relaxing to do," Lin Ke’er said with a smile, trying to ease her own tension.
Just as they reached the edge of the field, Lin Ke’er saw Shen Haoran and a few other boys in a heated discussion about game strategy. Hearing their laughter, she felt a complex swell of emotions for no apparent reason. She quickly lowered her head, not wanting to be seen. Xiao Mei noticed her reaction and couldn't help but smile. "Look at you, afraid to go over and say hello again."
Lin Ke’er’s heart rate quickened, a faint blush creeping onto her face. She quickly changed the subject. "Xiao Mei, you go ahead and play; I’ll wait for you here."
Xiao Mei arched an eyebrow, seemingly sensing the complex feelings deep within Lin Ke’er, but she did not pursue it. She patted her friend on the shoulder. "Alright then, I’m going to find a team. You won’t feel lonely all by yourself, will you?"
Lin Ke’er smiled and nodded. After Xiao Mei left, she remained where she was, her eyes drifting back to the basketball court. Shen Haoran stood in a corner of the court, joking with his friends. That sun-drenched smile was as dazzling as ever; that carefree spirit and confidence were truly irreplaceable.
A tremor of emotion passed through Lin Ke’er, and it was only when a breeze brushed against her face that she was brought back to reality. She turned and headed toward the other side of the campus, trying to put as much distance as possible between herself and the basketball court, not wanting her thoughts to wander any further.
Yet, Shen Haoran seemed entirely unaware of her departure; he continued to pour his youthful energy into the game. And Lin Ke’er still felt that in his world, she would always remain a background figure.
She began to understand the truth of her own heart—perhaps she had never truly moved past the image of Shen Haoran, and perhaps her feelings for him had never faded with the passage of time. But Shen Haoran had his own world and his own friends, while she could only watch from afar, a fleeting passerby in his life.
"Perhaps this is the best choice I can make for myself," Lin Ke’er whispered to herself, feeling a sense of loss she had no choice but to accept.
She walked to the far end of the lawn, stopped, and closed her eyes to soak in the warm sunlight. She thought that perhaps she should learn to let go, to pull herself out of this budding, unrequited affection, and stop letting Shen Haoran hold her back.
But when she opened her eyes and saw the basketball court in the distance, her heart skipped a beat once more. That youthful flutter refused to vanish.
"Forget it. Time will give me the answer eventually," she sighed softly, walking away.
Shen Haoran’s image remained etched in her mind. Even though she strove to return to a state of calm, she could not dispel the lingering preoccupation in her heart. She looked down at her fingers; the tips were slightly cold from anxiety, and her heartbeat was erratic. She knew she wasn't oblivious to these emotions, yet they arrived like the tide, irresistible and overwhelming.
She reached the other side of the campus, attempting to distance her thoughts from the court and the boy. The sun remained bright, the campus air carried a trace of warmth, and the surrounding trees swayed in the light breeze. A few small birds hopped among the branches, and it seemed as though nothing could break this tranquility.
Yet, the turbulence within her continued to surge, as if an invisible force were pulling her back toward the court, toward the person she dared not approach.
She stopped and squinted forward, taking a deep breath to calm herself. Every time she tried to let go, that knot deep inside her found another way to manifest in her life.
*If only I had been a little braver back then,* she thought, *maybe I wouldn't be so conflicted now.* She whispered the words to herself, half-persuading, half-struggling. Her eyes slowly lost focus, and a profound sense of loss washed over her, as if all her efforts and persistence had turned to nothing in that moment.
She stood there silently. Occasionally, a breeze would stir her long hair, bringing with it a breath of fresh air. The scenery around her was beautiful, yet her internal chaos felt entirely out of place. She realized suddenly that it had been too long since she had truly enjoyed this peace of her own.
Looking back, the sounds of laughter and joy still drifted from the basketball court. Shen Haoran’s voice was as clear as ever. He was running, shooting, and radiating vitality. And she, meanwhile, could only observe from afar, feeling the weight of that silent distance.
"Perhaps this is the only thing I can do," she murmured, as if encouraging herself or saying a final goodbye. She did not know if she would remain in this state forever, her heart filled with questions and unresolved confusion.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting the warm sunlight wash over her face. Her heart began to settle. Though a thousand words remained unspoken and a sense of reluctance lingered, she knew that life had to move forward, even if memories were difficult to smooth over.
She stood for a while longer, then finally turned to leave. Every step felt like a farewell—a farewell to that innocence, a farewell to the flutter of youth.
Just as she walked away, a soft call came from behind: "Lin Ke’er!"
She stopped abruptly and turned around. It was Shen Haoran. He had run over from the court, beads of sweat on his brow, his face still wearing that sun-drenched smile. There was a touch of surprise and warmth in his eyes, as if he hadn't noticed how lost she had been moments before.
"Why are you here?" Shen Haoran asked, his tone easy and natural.
Lin Ke’er’s heart raced, and her mind went blank. She had not expected him to seek her out. Despite the nervousness that made her voice tremble, she replied, "I... I just wanted to go for a walk."
Shen Haoran smiled slightly, his expression devoid of any sense of distance, replaced instead by a familiar, easy intimacy. He looked at her, seemingly sensing her unease. "You seem a bit tired lately. Is the pressure of the exams getting to you?"
Lin Ke’er was stunned. Her mouth parted, wanting to say something, but she closed it again. She didn't know how to answer. Perhaps Shen Haoran had already sensed her internal turmoil, and she, for her part, had never been able to be honest about her feelings.
"Yeah, I suppose," she finally nodded, forcing a smile.
Shen Haoran seemed to notice her awkwardness. He gave a gentle laugh and then turned, saying, "Since you're here, why don't we go grab a drink and take a break?"
Lin Ke’er felt a stir in her heart. The Shen Haoran before her was still the same sunny, carefree boy who had stolen her heart. Even though the conflicts and reluctance remained, in this moment, she did not want to miss the chance to be with him.
"Alright," she nodded, finally responding.
The two walked side by side toward the small shop outside the school. The sun remained warm, and the air was filled with the scent of fresh grass. For reasons she couldn't explain, Lin Ke’er’s mood lightened. Though she still harbored doubts about the feelings between them, at the very least, for this moment, she could set aside her heavy thoughts and enjoy this fleeting peace and beauty.
