Chapter 25: Unspoken Thoughts
Days felt as though they were being kneaded by an invisible hand into tiny, fleeting fragments, each second growing increasingly precious. The countdown to the college entrance examination had entered its final stage, and Lin Ke’er’s life was almost entirely consumed by textbooks and practice problems. She spent every day immersed in review, as if time itself were bearing witness to her efforts.
The first rays of morning sunlight pierced through the curtains, spilling onto her desk where golden specks danced across her books, lending a sense of warmth to the room. Lin Ke’er stretched, sitting on the edge of her bed as her fingers gently combed through her messy hair. She had stayed up late the previous night working on problems until her mind grew heavy and dull, forcing her to finally set down her pen. She knew the fatigue and pressure of this period were nearly suffocating, yet she gritted her teeth and pressed on.
She gazed out at the campus. In the distance, a few students were already jogging on the track, the morning breeze carrying a hint of freshness. This familiar campus, in the final chapter of her youth, had become her only solace. It held countless memories and was about to witness the most significant moment of her life.
Lin Ke’er stood up, pulled back the curtains, and breathed in the morning air. Just then, a familiar figure suddenly appeared at the other end of the track—Shen Haoran.
He wore a simple white T-shirt and was warming up with a few classmates. Bathed in the morning light, his silhouette was strikingly clear. His tall frame and fluid movements made him look like a powerful, graceful falcon. Lin Ke’er’s gaze lingered on him instinctively, her heart tightening slightly as if the entire world had frozen in that instant.
She knew clearly that she should not keep watching him, as it did nothing for her peace of mind. The pressure of the upcoming exam was already heavy enough; sinking further into an emotional whirlpool would only leave her more lost. Yet, whenever she saw Shen Haoran, that familiar warmth surged within her like an irresistible tide.
"Ke’er, you’re up early." A bright voice came from behind her.
Lin Ke’er snapped back to reality to see Xiao Mei standing in the doorway, holding breakfast. Xiao Mei walked in with a smile, set the food down, and sat on the edge of the bed. "I made some porridge this morning. Come and eat; don't go hungry."
"Thank you, Xiao Mei." Lin Ke’er smoothed her tangled hair and sat at the table.
Xiao Mei glanced at her with a light laugh. "What are you looking at? The basketball court over there is quite lively."
Lin Ke’er lowered her head, afraid to let her eyes wander in that direction again. "Nothing, I was just checking the weather."
Xiao Mei seemed to sense her thoughts and smiled teasingly. "You’re up so early today—is something on your mind?"
Lin Ke’er gave a shy smile, forcing herself to change the subject. "I was just thinking about today’s review tasks; I'm a bit nervous."
Xiao Mei’s smile grew even brighter as she patted her shoulder. "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; you’ve already done so well. I believe you’ll get a great score on the exam!"
"Thank you." A warmth bloomed in Lin Ke’er’s heart. Though Xiao Mei’s encouragement was brief, it made her feel incredibly at ease. In this challenging time, the concern of a friend was like a beacon guiding her through the mist, allowing her to keep moving forward no matter what.
After breakfast, as they prepared to head to the classroom, they encountered several classmates walking in groups and greeting one another. Lin Ke’er couldn't help but glance back, catching sight of Shen Haoran and some of his friends walking toward them. Her heart raced, but she feigned composure and kept her head down as she walked toward the classroom.
"Morning, Haoran," a boy called out loudly with a sunny smile.
Shen Haoran paused, smiling at the group before his gaze swept over Lin Ke’er and Xiao Mei. For a fleeting second, his eyes lingered on Lin Ke’er as if deep in thought, before returning to a calm expression.
"Morning," Shen Haoran replied simply, his tone carrying a gentle quality.
Lin Ke’er felt that casual glance and her heart accelerated. She knew Shen Haoran had never shown any special affection toward her, yet for some reason, whenever he looked at her, ripples would stir in her heart like a soft, invisible drizzle. She bit her lip, struggling to remain calm, and turned her focus back to the path ahead.
"Let’s go," Xiao Mei whispered, clearly noticing the shift in Lin Ke’er’s mood.
Lin Ke’er nodded, quickly withdrawing her gaze and following Xiao Mei to the classroom. She knew she couldn't let these emotions interfere with her studies, nor could she let unspoken secrets occupy every inch of her thoughts.
Upon entering the classroom, Lin Ke’er took a deep breath and sat at her desk. The students around her were busy discussing the day’s review, but she felt somewhat distracted. Even as she told herself to focus, Shen Haoran’s image kept surfacing in her mind. She couldn't help but think that perhaps she should let go of these distractions; after all, her future was what mattered most.
Suddenly, the classroom door opened gently, and the homeroom teacher walked in. She looked at each student and said in a gentle tone, "Students, today we will have our final mock exam. Please stay calm and do your best. The entrance exam is almost here; let’s meet it in our best state."
The room went silent instantly. Every student bowed their heads, preparing for the mock test. Lin Ke’er gripped her pen, her gaze firm. Despite the lingering turbulence in her heart, she knew she could not be swayed by these emotions. She had to give it her all and make every day count.
She took a deep breath, concentrating on the day’s challenges. The approach of the exam was bound to be a time of pressure and unease, but she understood that only by facing difficulties head-on could she secure a brighter future.
As the teacher finished speaking, the classroom fell into a hush. The air was thick with tension, and anxiety was written on almost every face. Lin Ke’er took a deep breath, feeling her heart rate quicken as the confusion and hesitation from her studies the night before surfaced in her mind.
Her pen tip trembled slightly, and her gaze drifted toward the window. On the track, the morning runners were still there; under the blue sky and white clouds, their moving figures radiated vitality like the brilliant sun. Lin Ke’er felt as though she were a shadow cast within it, unable to quiet the ripples in her heart.
"Lin Ke’er, you must give it your all today," she whispered to herself, a soft murmur of encouragement.
Yet, the unease remained. She had been a hardworking child since she was small; though she occasionally felt anxious from the pressure, she never stopped pursuing her dreams. She knew she had walked this path for too long; to give up or retreat would mean turning her back on years of effort.
"Ke’er, you look a bit nervous," Xiao Mei whispered, gently patting her shoulder with an imperceptible touch of care.
Lin Ke’er snapped back, smiled, and waved her hand. "I’m fine, just thinking too much."
Xiao Mei didn't seem entirely convinced but said nothing more. She turned to prepare her exam materials. In the classroom, other students were opening their books for a final review. The atmosphere grew tighter, as if everyone’s thoughts had already left the present moment, flying toward the upcoming exam.
Lin Ke’er lowered her head and quickly opened her review materials. She knew the only thing she could do was focus; she could not let these trivial emotions disrupt her concentration. She scrutinized every problem, striving for perfection. Although a slight agitation remained in her heart, she forced herself to clear away the distractions and focus on the pen in her hand.
Just then, a familiar sound drifted in from outside—the rhythmic thud of a basketball against the ground. Her heart skipped a beat, and she couldn't help but look out the window again. On the basketball court, several boys were playing intensely, and Shen Haoran stood under the hoop, ready to receive the ball. His every move exuded that familiar sunshine and confidence, fluid and powerful, like a nimble leopard—agile and swift.
Lin Ke’er’s gaze lingered on him, her eyes somewhat glazed. Though she knew full well that Shen Haoran did not belong to her, every time she saw him, a warmth would rise within her, ripples quietly spreading through her heart.
"Shen Haoran..." she whispered his name, fragments of the past surfacing in her mind. She remembered when they had planned school activities together and the occasional meetings on the track where they would chat. Even though those were brief exchanges, her heart would race every time, a youthful flutter that she still found impossible to forget.
"Ke’er?" Xiao Mei’s voice broke her train of thought once more. She hastily pulled her gaze away, smiled, and whispered, "Are you thinking about those things again?"
Lin Ke’er laughed awkwardly and shook her head. "No, really, it’s nothing."
Xiao Mei frowned, clearly unconvinced, but she didn't press the issue. She simply nodded and turned to grab her notebook for a final review.
Time slipped away, and the mock exam finally began. Lin Ke’er sat up straight, staring at the first question on the paper, forcing all her attention onto the test content. She knew that no matter how turbulent her heart was, the only things that could help her overcome this were her own effort and persistence.
However, as the exam progressed, Lin Ke’er still couldn't fully shake the unease. She rubbed her fingertips against her pen, glancing toward the window from time to time. She knew she was still thinking of him—Shen Haoran.
It wasn't just Shen Haoran, but all the memories of her youth, the past she had never fully let go of. While the entrance exam was her current goal, the emotional entanglements of her youth did not seem to vanish with the passage of time. They were like invisible chains, tightly wrapped around her heart, impossible to fully untangle.
"Ke’er, focus," she told herself, trying to return to the state of the exam, but her thoughts remained chaotic.
Gradually, halfway through the exam, Lin Ke’er felt a wave of exhaustion. She set down her pen, closed her eyes, and gently massaged her temples. Outside, the noise from the court continued, punctuated by occasional bursts of laughter; it seemed everyone on this campus was living out their own version of youth.
"After the exams, we might each have different futures," she thought to herself, a series of blurred figures flashing through her mind. Shen Haoran’s image appeared once more. She closed her eyes, telling herself silently, "No matter what, I must keep going."
