Chapter Fourteen: Ripples Within the Heart
Time flowed like a gently meandering stream, tenderly washing away all things and easing the ripples in Lin Ke’er’s heart. Since Shen Haoran’s departure, the days had not fully calmed her restless spirit. Whenever she walked alone across the campus or when the night grew silent, the familiar figure of Shen Haoran would still emerge vividly in her mind. In those moments, it felt as if she had stepped into a world without him, where loss and emptiness intertwined, weighing heavily upon her soul.
Yet, as days passed, she gradually realized that within this familiar campus, she could reclaim fragments of what had been lost. The approach of the college entrance examination loomed ever closer, and with it, mounting pressure. Lin Ke’er shifted most of her focus toward diligent review. She immersed herself in the demanding workload, burying her emotions within textbooks and notes, attempting to soothe the ache inside her heart.
However, when night fell and the world grew quiet, opening her books could not erase the image of Shen Haoran from her thoughts. Though their shared time was brief, it had left an indelible mark upon her memory, impossible to efface.
Standing by the window, Lin Ke’er gazed out into the night sky. Moonlight streamed softly through the lattice, gently touching the tips of her hair and illuminating her face, faintly etched with weariness. She sighed quietly, pulling aside the curtain. Outside, the tranquil darkness remained unbroken, stars twinkling faintly along the horizon. Suddenly, she realized how long it had been since she last looked up at this starry expanse.
“What are you doing right now?” she murmured to herself, her voice carrying a lonely echo in the empty room. Her hand instinctively touched her chest, where the hollow sensation surged anew, as if she had lost something precious. Yet she could not quite discern whether this sense of loss stemmed from Shen Haoran’s absence, or from a deeper confusion within her own soul.
At that moment, her phone lit up. A message from Xiao Mei appeared: “Ke’er, let’s go to the library this afternoon. We can review together and take a break.”
Lin Ke’er glanced at her phone, a slight smile curving her lips. Xiao Mei was the only person who had stayed by her side throughout this time. Warmth blossomed in her heart as she replied, “Sure, see you this afternoon.”
That afternoon, true to their plan, Lin Ke’er and Xiao Mei entered the library. The air inside was quiet and comforting, suffused with the scent of books. Sunlight filtered through the glass windows, casting a warm glow upon their desks, illuminating textbooks and notes. Though the day grew warmer, the air conditioning made the room pleasantly cool. Lin Ke’er took a seat by the window, a mathematics book and a stack of study materials beside her. She bent over the pages, brows furrowed, yet her thoughts often drifted elsewhere.
“Xiao Mei, what do you think we’ll become after the college exam?” Lin Ke’er asked softly, her voice tinged with a subtle melancholy.
Xiao Mei looked up, puzzled. “Why the sudden question? Are you thinking about Shen Haoran again?”
Lin Ke’er paused, then nodded. “Yes. Since he left, I feel so empty. After the exam, we might all go our separate ways, and perhaps our paths will never cross again. Time seems to fly so fast—as if in the blink of an eye, we will leave this place and embark on our own lives.”
Xiao Mei sighed gently, putting down her pen. “I know what you mean. But you have to understand that life is full of uncertainties. Some people walk with you for a while, but in the end, you must carve your own path. Shen Haoran’s leaving doesn’t mean you’ve lost everything. He has his future, and you have yours.”
Lin Ke’er nodded silently, acknowledging the truth in Xiao Mei’s words. Shen Haoran’s departure was merely a brief chapter in their lives. He had stepped toward his own future, and she must learn to let go and bravely pursue her own.
Yet, the emptiness buried deep within her heart refused to dissipate. Perhaps it was not merely the sorrow of Shen Haoran’s absence, but the fear that this youthful time was slipping away forever—afraid to bid farewell to those carefree days, afraid she would never again find that pure, beautiful feeling.
“Xiao Mei, I will do my best to face it,” Lin Ke’er whispered, her gaze growing resolute. “I know life doesn’t pause. No matter how reluctant I am, tomorrow will come.”
Xiao Mei smiled and nodded. “Yes, tomorrow will be better.”
They resumed their study, the hours slipping quietly by. The afternoon sunlight faded outside, and the library’s lights brightened, enveloping the space in a warm, serene glow. Lin Ke’er suddenly understood that whether Shen Haoran was near or far, life must go on, and the days of youth would not stand still. What she needed was not to linger in memories, but to move forward and embrace the future that awaited her.
Just then, her phone vibrated again. She glanced down to see a message from Shen Haoran: “Ke’er, how have you been lately? Good luck with your exams. No matter what, I’ll always support you.”
Her heart quickened, fingers pausing over the screen. The message was simple yet warm, filled with care and encouragement. Tears welled in her eyes, but she pressed her lips tightly to hold back the flood of emotions.
Taking a deep breath, she replied quickly: “Thank you, Haoran. I’ll do my best. I hope everything goes well for you too.”
After sending the message, she gently placed her phone back in her bag and returned to her reading. In that moment, a flicker of comfort touched her heart—though distance and estrangement were growing between them, the feelings they once shared remained unchanged.
Sunlight still streamed softly through the windows, and Lin Ke’er’s mood gradually settled. Whatever the future held, she would walk forward with determination.
She set her book aside and glanced around. The library lights glowed steadily, the air fragrant with faint traces of paper and ink, peaceful and warm. Outside, darkness had begun to fall, draping the campus in quiet shadows. Her eyes wandered to the scene beyond the window—the night cloaking the grounds in tranquility and depth. Clouds had dispersed to reveal a cold, clear starry sky. Those stars flickered silently, like the unresolved confusion and unease nestled deep within her heart—distant, yet strangely close.
“Xiao Mei,” Lin Ke’er suddenly asked, her voice low and tinged with barely hidden anxiety, “do you think if we stayed here, continuing this life, would it just go on like this forever?”
Xiao Mei glanced at her and chuckled softly. “What’s gotten into you today? Why so gloomy all of a sudden?” She set her pen down and turned to face Lin Ke’er. “You’re the hardest worker in our class. How did you suddenly become so sentimental?”
Lin Ke’er sighed softly, her eyes clouded. “I don’t know why, but I feel myself slowly drifting away from everything here. Everything around me is familiar, yet somehow it feels like parts of it no longer belong to me.” Her gaze dropped, as if searching for a way to express the indescribable ache.
Xiao Mei’s lips curved gently, her eyes filled with tender concern. “Don’t overthink it. Everyone feels this way sometimes, especially now, with graduation so near and the future uncertain. What you need to do is cherish every moment right now, and keep moving forward without distraction.”
“You’re right,” Lin Ke’er smiled faintly, though unease still lingered in her eyes. “But you know, the pressure of these exams is immense. Sometimes I wonder if, after it’s all over, I’ll never see these familiar faces again—not even Shen Haoran. I don’t know if we’ll ever meet again.”
Seeing her fall silent, Xiao Mei reached out and patted her shoulder. “Don’t think too much about it. Even if we part ways, it doesn’t mean we’ll lose contact forever. Technology today is so advanced—calls, video chats keep people connected. You shared such beautiful times; how could that just vanish?”
Lin Ke’er nodded slowly, a faint smile touching her lips, though reluctance still shimmered in her eyes. “I hope so,” she thought quietly. Shen Haoran had been like a radiant light that illuminated her youth—but that light, she knew, would eventually fade.
The atmosphere in the library grew even quieter. Students bent over their work, the soft scratch of pens on paper barely audible. Occasionally, someone rose to stretch or fetch a drink, briefly breaking the stillness. Lin Ke’er stared at her math book, striving to focus on the problems before her. Yet the formulas and questions blurred, her mind returning again and again to Shen Haoran’s image—his smile, his gaze, the reluctant farewell.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself back to reality, eyes settling once more on the pages. Still, her heart could not escape those memories. Shen Haoran’s leaving felt like a heavy door silently closing behind her. Beyond it lay an unknown future, a time she could not control. She had depended on him so much, believing that with him by her side, everything would be simple and beautiful. But now, he was gone, and she remained on this familiar campus, battling her inner demons.
“Xiao Mei, sometimes I think some things just aren’t meant to last forever. Maybe all we can do is cherish what we have for as long as we can,” Lin Ke’er said suddenly, her voice trembling, sadness flickering in her eyes.
Xiao Mei regarded her quietly for a moment, then smiled gently, a steadfast light in her gaze. “I know how you feel—it's complicated, isn’t it? But you have to believe that not every farewell is the end. Some people, even when they leave, leave behind a brilliant light in your life. We can’t let fear of an uncertain future keep us from embracing it.”
Looking into her friend’s eyes, Lin Ke’er gradually relaxed. She closed her eyes briefly, inhaled deeply, and smiled again. “You’re always so optimistic. I really admire that.”
Xiao Mei laughed softly. “And you’re the same—managing to stay calm under so much pressure every day. I admire you too.”
They exchanged a smile, the mood lightening between them. Though unspoken pains lingered, with Xiao Mei’s companionship, Lin Ke’er found a glimmer of relief. She knew the future held many uncertainties, but it was those very uncertainties that made life’s moments so precious. No matter what, she must bravely press on and face the unknown.
Outside the library, a gentle evening breeze swept across the campus lawns, bringing a cool freshness. The campus buildings stood quietly in the twilight, as though entering a serene dream. Lin Ke’er’s gaze rested beyond the window, a strange feeling stirring within her. Her world, at this moment, seemed to expand beyond its former narrow confines.
The road ahead might not unfold as she wished, but she had resolved not to cling to the past. Instead, she would embrace this new journey and pursue the light that belonged to her.
At that moment, the soft voice of the library’s public announcement drifted through the room: “Attention all students, the library will close at eight o’clock. Please prepare your belongings in advance.”
Snapping out of her reverie, Lin Ke’er stood and gathered her books. She exchanged a smile with Xiao Mei as they prepared to leave this quiet sanctuary. Night had fully fallen; street lamps lit the campus paths with gentle light, as if guiding them toward their futures.
“Let’s go,” Xiao Mei said, patting Lin Ke’er’s back. “We studied hard today. We’ll keep at it tomorrow.”
Lin Ke’er nodded and stepped forward. Exiting the library, she welcomed the cool evening breeze, feeling her heart slowly ease. Perhaps the road ahead would be far from smooth, but she was ready now—to walk the path that was truly hers.
