Volume One, Chapter 49: The Fierce and Ugly Shen Chiyan

Song Qinian was currently unlucky in love but successful in her career. The marketing plan she and Shen Yushu had worked on was selected, and both of them received praise from their manager. It was also payday, and although she lost her perfect attendance bonus due to taking leave and being late, her total pay, including the bonus, reached an astonishing 112,000 yuan.
This was the first time Song Qinian had earned such a large sum, so she was naturally delighted. She first transferred 100,000 yuan to Shen Keqin, then personally prepared a small gift for everyone who had helped her. Some received phone charms, others keychains, and some had pendants. Each one bore a cute chibi portrait of the recipient.
After receiving her gift, Miao Ziai’s heart nearly melted. She hugged Song Qinian tightly and kissed her cheek fiercely. “Nian Nian, not only are you adorable and beautiful, but you’re also so talented with your hands. Whoever marries you is truly blessed by their ancestors.”
Miao Ziai accidentally bumped into someone while speaking. Seeing it was Shen Chiyan, Song Qinian’s expression subtly changed, and she lowered her head silently. Miao Ziai was startled but quickly smiled and greeted, “President Shen,” then pulled Song Qinian to stand properly beside her like two mischievous students caught by the head teacher.
Shen Chiyan’s face darkened, his cold, shadowed eyes scanning Song Qinian, who kept her gaze lowered, refusing to meet his. His mood soured suddenly. “This is the company. Be mindful of your behavior.”
“Sorry, President Shen. I just got a gift handmade by Nian Nian and got a bit carried away. I’ll be more careful next time!” Miao Ziai apologized earnestly.
“What gift?” Shen Chiyan asked.
Surprised that the busy president was curious, Miao Ziai eagerly showed the phone charm Song Qinian had given her. “This one, isn’t it pretty?”
Song Qinian felt a bit embarrassed and instinctively went to bite her lip, but an involuntary flash of Shen Chiyan’s words crossed her mind: “Only I can bite this spot.”
She resisted the urge to comply and instead bit down hard on her lip, causing herself considerable pain.
“Handmade?” Shen Chiyan’s gaze settled on Song Qinian. She still didn’t look up. Miao Ziai nodded happily, “Yes, Nian Nian is amazing.”
Seeing that Song Qinian had never once looked his way, Shen Chiyan furrowed his brow. Wasn’t she happy when he was painting on her face earlier? Why was she avoiding his gaze now? Was she feeling guilty?
He said no more and strode away.
Once he left, Miao Ziai resumed her infatuation. “Oh my, today’s President Shen is even more handsome than yesterday. How can there be such a perfect man in this world? Whoever marries him will truly be blessed by their ancestors.”
Song Qinian: “…”

The two entered the marketing department, where Shen Yushu smiled as he approached Song Qinian. “Nian Nian, thank you for the keychain. I really like it.”
His voice was loud enough for everyone nearby to turn and look.
Miao Ziai tugged on Shen Yushu’s arm and whispered, “Why are you so loud? Nian Nian prepared gifts for everyone. Showing off like this isn’t good.”
Shen Yushu looked a little apologetic. “Sorry, Nian Nian. I just really like the gift and got excited.”
Song Qinian smiled and shook her head. “It’s okay. I’m glad you like it.”
To Song Qinian, Shen Yushu and Miao Ziai were friends; the rest were merely colleagues. She had limited time and energy and couldn’t prepare gifts for everyone.
Seeing the smile on Song Qinian’s face, Shen Yushu felt a pang of sadness.
Meanwhile, Shen Chiyan was driving with Li Nanxun to meet a client. Shen Chiyan’s attention was fixed on the documents in his hand.
In the driver’s seat, Gao Kunlun noticed Li Nanxun’s phone charm and asked excitedly, “Secretary Li, is that keychain from Miss Song?”
Li Nanxun nodded slightly, expressionless.
“I have this pendant from Miss Song too, with my chibi portrait on it. I really treasure it.”
Hearing the words “Miss Song,” Shen Chiyan slowly looked up at Gao Kunlun’s pendant. The chibi Gao Kunlun swayed with the movement of the car, looking rather festive.
Shen Chiyan frowned lightly. “Sent by Song Qinian?”
“Yes, Miss Song is so kind.”
“Snap.”
Shen Chiyan slammed his laptop shut. Gao Kunlun and Li Nanxun exchanged a glance in the rearview mirror, noticing the dark and unpleasant expression on his face, and dared not speak further.
Losing interest in the documents, Shen Chiyan picked up his phone and saw a social media post from Shen Keqin.
“Thanks to the sweetest girl of the century for the phone charm. I’m too reluctant to use it—I’m going to keep it in the bank’s safety deposit box.”
Underneath the text was a photo of Shen Keqin holding the phone charm, which, unsurprisingly, featured a chibi of himself.
Shen Chiyan’s mood grew increasingly irritable. Knowing that his irritation stemmed from Song Qinian made it all the more maddening.
That evening, Shen Chiyan returned home with a sour expression. Zhang Qiaoqiao dared not utter a sound upon seeing him.
“Where’s Song Qinian?”
“Madam is in her room.”
“What’s she doing?”
“Not sure. She went back to her room after dinner.”

Shen Chiyan’s heart stirred slightly. Could it be that… Song Qinian was preparing a gift for him?
“Young master, should I call madam out?”
“No need. I don’t have anything to discuss with her. Let her be busy.”
Watching Shen Chiyan head upstairs, Zhang Qiaoqiao was surprised. What was going on? His expression was so bad when he first came home—how did it improve so quickly?
After showering, Shen Chiyan waited for Song Qinian to knock on his door.
But by midnight, she still hadn’t come.
Frustrated, Shen Chiyan got up angrily and stormed into Song Qinian’s room.
“Song…”
He stopped mid-sentence when he saw her asleep, head resting on the desk.
This woman—had she not considered the toll sitting so long would take on her back?
“Hey… wake up! If you want to sleep, go to bed!”
Shen Chiyan nudged her, and she stirred, toppling forward. Quick as a flash, Shen Chiyan caught her.
Perhaps from exhaustion, Song Qinian slept deeply, nuzzling his chest and finding a comfortable spot before resuming her slumber.
Shen Chiyan noticed she was clutching a plush toy. Pulling it out, he found it was a fierce-looking, ugly character doll.
The doll wore a black suit, white shirt, and black tie, with an angry scowl.
This doll… why did it look so familiar?
Turning it over, Shen Chiyan saw his own name embroidered on the back.
Shen Chiyan: “…”
Damn Song Qinian—she actually made me look this hideous!
And everyone else’s doll had smiles—why was mine scowling?
Could it be that in her eyes, this was how she truly saw me?
