Chapter 49: The Finale of the First Lifetime's Tribulation (Part One)
Li Yan watched helplessly as everything unfolded before his eyes.
He desperately wanted to stop it.
However, he realized that although he could move now, his power was still like an egg striking a rock—he was completely incapable of defeating the uncanny boss.
As time passed, the uncanny boss had already carved all the flesh off Li Wangxi's body.
Li Wangxi's miserable screams grew weaker and weaker, causing wave after wave of stabbing pain in Li Yan's heart.
He shouted in despair, "Come at me! It's my fault. Leave them out of this!"
Yet the uncanny boss only smiled as he looked at Li Yan, then said to him, "Don't be impatient, it will be your turn soon enough. I want you to watch with your own eyes as they die."
Tears streamed uncontrollably from Li Yan's eyes. At that moment, he hated the uncanny boss with every fiber of his being.
Yet he could do absolutely nothing against the uncanny boss.
The blood kept flowing from Li Wangxi's body until it ran dry, and he breathed his last.
His soul drifted out from his physical body.
Reluctant to part, it came to Li Yan's side, wanting to use its utmost strength to protect him.
Seeing Li Wangxi's soul filled Li Yan with agonizing grief, for it meant that Li Wangxi was truly dead.
He wanted to grasp the soul and keep it by his side.
Perhaps there would still be a chance to revive him later.
However, the uncanny boss struck once more, devouring Li Wangxi's soul.
The uncanny boss found immense pleasure in watching Li Yan's expression of agony.
He moved swiftly to the front of Wang Yanjing, and then opened the cage that held her.
Pulling Wang Yanjing out, he made her levitate suspended in mid-air.
Then, many other cages appeared around Li Yan.
There were also people locked inside these cages.
The uncanny boss pulled the people out of these cages as well, making them levitate in mid-air too.
Then, he transformed them all to look exactly like Wang Yanjing.
With a smile, the uncanny boss walked up to Li Yan and said to him, "Let's play a game now. If you can pick out which one of these people is your mother, I will let you all go."
Li Yan had originally thought that since the boss hadn't scrambled the order, picking the right one would be an easy task.
However, the uncanny boss was far from foolish; he rapidly randomized the positions of all these people.
Looking at those familiar yet identical faces, Li Yan felt a deep sense of sorrow. How was he supposed to choose?
He hurried among the crowd, trying to sniff out whose scent belonged to Wang Yanjing.
To his surprise, however, the scent emanating from every single one of them was completely identical.
He wanted to touch them, but the uncanny boss would not allow it.
The uncanny boss stopped him, driving him back five meters away and demanding that he rely solely on his naked eyes to observe.
Li Yan felt that the boss was being somewhat unreasonable, and cursed angrily, "If you didn't want me to pick correctly, just say so. Making me rely purely on sight—even you wouldn't be able to pick right."
He was gripped by a sense of utter despair.
Hearing Li Yan's words, the uncanny boss scoffed mockingly, "If I were you, I would use every possible means to make a choice, rather than just standing there complaining."
Li Yan was left speechless by the retort.
Afterward, he used his spiritual ability to scan the group. Yet everything he detected here was exactly the same.
He had no idea why. Could it be that Wang Yanjing wasn't here at all?
Still, he dared not be certain, especially since he hadn't actually seen Wang Yanjing leave.
An idea struck him, and with a solemn expression, he said, "Is my mother not here at all?"
As soon as he said this, he began closely observing the uncanny boss's expression.
If there was any anomaly in the uncanny boss's demeanor, it would mean his guess was likely correct.
Hearing Li Yan's words, the uncanny boss flickered with a trace of panic before quickly putting on a composed facade.
Noticing this, Li Yan stated with absolute certainty, "Everyone here is fake."
The uncanny boss chuckled and clapped for Li Yan, then said to him, "Congratulations, the game is over."
Upon hearing the uncanny boss's words, Li Yan's heart sank.
The boss had said the game was over, not that he had won.
This meant that even if he guessed correctly, the boss still had no intention of keeping his promise.
As expected, the uncanny boss slaughtered everyone present.
After their deaths, they all reverted to their original appearances, and indeed, none of them were Wang Yanjing.
The real Wang Yanjing then materialized beside the uncanny boss.
Li Yan carefully monitored the uncanny boss's movements.
The uncanny boss lifted the control over Wang Yanjing and told her to return.
Li Yan also rushed rapidly toward Wang Yanjing; once he reached her side, she would be safe.
Yet just as he had covered half the distance, the uncanny boss behind Wang Yanjing suddenly launched an attack.
Seeing this, Li Yan knitted his brows tightly and shouted a warning, "Mom, watch out behind you!"
He then accelerated his pace, sprinted behind Wang Yanjing, and took the blow in her stead.
Wang Yanjing was racked with grief as she looked at the fallen Li Yan, weeping while holding him in her arms.
Yet right as she wept, the uncanny boss launched another attack.
Noticing this, Li Yan wanted to shield her once more. But this time, Wang Yanjing pushed Li Yan aside, taking the uncanny boss's attack all by herself.
The impact flung her dozens of meters away, where she crashed heavily onto the ground.
Tears streamed endlessly down Li Yan's face as he dragged his battered body, crawling toward her with extreme difficulty.
He was almost by Wang Yanjing's side.
Yet the uncanny boss struck Wang Yanjing a few more times in rapid succession.
Unable to withstand the shock of the energy onslaught, Wang Yanjing finally collapsed.
Her soul detached from her body—she was dead.
Li Yan let out a cry of agony. Struggling mightily, he rose to his feet.
With resolute determination, he staggered over to Wang Yanjing's soul.
No matter what it took, he refused to let Wang Yanjing's soul be destroyed too.
Yet life was profoundly unfair at times; Wang Yanjing's soul was snatched away by the uncanny boss once again.
The uncanny boss swallowed Wang Yanjing's soul as well.
Consumed by grief and rage, Li Yan wiped away his tears and forced himself to stand up.
Realizing that he had already lost everything, and that his previous resistance had been repeatedly crushed,
a surge of fierce fury welled up within him. He clenched his fists, determined to fight a desperate battle to the death!
To avenge them!
The resentment within his body broke free from all control, leaking out violently.
In a mere fraction of a second, the entire uncanny palace was enveloped by this overwhelming aura of grievance.
For the very first time, the uncanny boss panicked at the sight before him.
Gripping his saber, Li Yan saw the blade completely transform into a pitch-black hue.
With a chilling smile, he dragged the saber as he walked toward the uncanny boss: "Even if you defeat me a thousand or ten thousand times today, I will kill you! Let's perish together!"
The uncanny boss, however, showed not the slightest hint of fear, refusing to believe that Li Yan possessed the capability to kill him.
He attempted to control Li Yan once again.
To his astonishment, this time LiYan broke free from the mental control in mere minutes.
Li Yan regained full command of his own consciousness.
He strode swiftly up to the uncanny boss, smiling sinisterly as he declared, "So you love controlling others, do you? Let me give you a taste of your own medicine."
Locking his eyes onto the uncanny boss, Li Yan began attempting to assert control over him.
The uncanny boss had not taken Li Yan seriously at all. Yet to his profound shock, he found himself genuinely trapped under Li Yan's control.
